The Red Arrow shows where you can put a padlock/bolt etc to keep the mechanism from operating from the outside. Day in and Day out I'm not concerned but I'd lock it if I was gone for a long summer ride on the Iron Horse--

They make a gate latch that operates from both sides, as for locking it, I don’t even have a key to the house, as for the back yard, my 7 pound Yorker takes care of intruders

I saw a similar set up on a 1850s Era house and they just lulled the string in when they didn't want visitors. I don't remember if there was a system for what to do when they were gone.
If you're wondering I'm probably being sarcastic.

It's often been said that Locks only help keep honest people honest.

It wouldn't take that much to break down that gate OR the doors on my apartment--BUT--hopefully the commotion would alert either me or my neighbors that something was wrong and to call the police.

My gate has a latch that works from the inside or outside. It's very easy and they sell them at the local hardware store. But I do like the Weight idea you have on that gate latch, Roy. Good idea. The last time I had made one like yours I just relied on the closing of the gate to return the latch to the right position. It worked half the time. But your weight idea would always work. Nice!

I have seen people put a little spring on them too, so it latches every time, the weight is a little more simplistic.

I'd thought about using a spring loaded system but things have to be out of the way of the latching rod and by using a line that can be angled away from contacting that latching rod and a weight I avoided any clearance problems.

    Plus--Gravity is always working 24/7.

Nice ingenuity Roy, and who needs locks when ya got Travis?
My gate only has the latch on the inside, but if you reach over in just the right spot you can undo it. Dissuades honest folks at least.

As I'd said a couple of posts ago Locks only help keep honest people honest.

I have a feeling that if by chance I was away and the Boars Nest was broken into that Travis would either just lay in his chair and watch while my place was robbed OR get up and lead the intruders to where the valuables are in hopes of them giving him some treats
