I'm at an age where I can look way back. When I do I see a rolling wave of addiction where one variety was replaced by another. Clearly some are less destructive than others, and getting off toxic substances is generally a good thing. I do, however, end up at the same point, with a question, when I examine a life of addiction: what exactly were you trying to do, what were you running from or where were you running to (of course I've stopped running and now gimp along)? I believe the addict is inherently unhappy. Our lives feel a little like we are in a movie where the sound is ever so slightly out of sync with the players. So the question remains, does an addict ever fix or remodel the source of addiction?
I've never entered a program. Big Bill was in 'the program' for decades, gave public talks, went into prisons, was a sponsor etc. Yet he died alone, found days later on the floor of his garage. He returned to alcohol and found a way to become addicted to opium that he got for some health issue (sounds weird, I know).
To the OP, I don't think this is supposed to be easy.

There is some great advice in this thread. Do all of the above and take it one day at a time. I have almost 18 years and am willing to talk via PM if needed. You can do this!

Well done and I wish you all the best. I like the fact that you go the EMC path. I have been told by people who can know that the best way to take care of yourself is to take care of others.

Thanked: 351I have not read all the posts in response to your original post, but I know what you went through!
I have been away from this forum for quite some time due to issues of a similar vein, though not exactly the same, but that was only because of where I am, and what I had access to.
I'm glad to have you back, and I'm happy that I'm back!
