Thanked: 4206Being a relative newcomer to the site, Started in 2013. I have been continually surprised, and humbly improved, by the overall altruism of the members of SRP. Best bunch of gentlemen I have ever met. Be it online, or in person..
I would not be using a straight today were it not for the hands on teachings I experienced at McBladescar's GTG in the summer of 2013.
I have received more than I have been able to give back, so far. But continue to look for opportunities to even the score, as it were. Both in tools, techniques, and experiments captured to share with others.
Roy, your friends widow was wise to entrust you with his tools and treasures. Mike will be comforted on the other side knowing you are doing right by his legacy.
Merry Christmas all."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

I have received some beautiful hand-crafted stuff from the gentlemen on this board over the years: a beautiful handmade English Bridle strop from hidestoart aka Kevin, a custom brass and acrylic brush from Walleyeman aka Ray, and a nice slate hone from CJBianco (none of whom I see around SRP anymore, sadly). I won a beautiful razor and other stuff in the Giveaway a few months back. I also probably won a couple hundred dollars worth of freebies at the awesome Asheville, NC meetup a few years ago. So the SRP community has been very good to me!
In response, I have sent Bill a few items for the Giveaway in the past, and hope to send more. And this Christmas, I am giving my rescaled straights to both of my sons, and I have made up a complete kit for my niece's husband: a nice Blue Seal straight in rosewood and brass (that Bianco helped me get my 1st JNAt edge ever on Mmonday, and it is a wicked shaver-he earned his dram of scotch lol), a strop, tub of soap, and a nice badger brush with stand (that badger brush came with the fancy French razor I won in our giveaway!). He's one I'm pretty certain I can corrupt.
Cool thing is, none of the Christmas presents I made or am giving away cost me anything. It was all blades, scale wood, and other accessories I had laying around anyway-might as well pay it forward to keep our hobby going.
Anyway, Merry Christmas to all in our awesome and generous community! Aaron/SHDLast edited by ScoutHikerDad; 12-22-2016 at 07:44 PM.

In going back to reread this whole thread, I just noticed that Walleyeman aka Ray is still with us. Hey, Ray-I still use your awesome brush all the time!
One of the themes of this thread, I think, is the greatest gift of all, which is one's TIME. The older I get, the more I believe that really is the greatest gift in this chaotic, rush-rush world. So whether it's making a lengthy response to a honing or restoration question (as too many to list have done for me repeatedly), or Ron/Utopian helping me solve a honing problem and letting me finish all my blades on his SG 20k at the Asheville meetup a few years ago, or the time and expertise Ray put into making that gorgeous brush, or you guys who devote an entire day in your shop to a clueless newb, you give that ultimate gift-after all, it is a finite thing.
And that in itself is a nice legacy to pay forward to folks who won't forget it. Part of what I am trying to teach my young adult sons and niece's husband with those home-made Christmas razors is that very concept: don't go to the mall and waste money on some shiny, mass-market impersonal gift-give them your time.
So to all on here, thanks mostly for your time. AaronLast edited by ScoutHikerDad; 12-22-2016 at 08:16 PM.

I know it's not shaving related, but a friend of mine and I do 8 BBQ cooks for Veterans every year. We just did 3 this last week for two blind. Veterans support groups and 1 for 200 homeless veterans in Detroit on Saturday. We pay all these mostly out of pocket with a few donations. One of my favorite cooks is for the Former Prisoners of War group. These guys are awesome. If it wasn't for the guys I know teaching me how to cook BBQ at the professional level I couldn't do this. And always seeming to have the funds needed to help these Heros enjoy a good meal with folks who care.
I've been blessed in so many waysLook sharp and smell nice for the ladies.~~~Benz
