In Canada we have Jews and Mormons, Huderites, Ducabores and the list goes on. All of these groups have to balance between what their religion accepts and what law accepts. There are very few issues of law that have come from these groups. I am not going to say their is no problems, but they are very limited, perhaps even more so than those of us that grew and live without religious laws. It simply means that people of fundamentalist faiths need to figure it out. I do t think that any of these groups have had much of a struggle, but perhaps, there are not many in my region, and as a result I only see what the media chooses to share.
Good point about other faiths having their own rules to live by but yet accept the rule of law as the law of the land in the country they live in/emigrate to.

I do know that Somali immigrant cab drivers in the Mpls/St Paul area have been known to refuse rides to people who purchase alcohol.

True story which happened a few months ago in a Walmart in St. Cloud, MN: An aunt of mine belongs to a Christian church in that area. A friend of hers, a fellow church member, was in line checking out. A female Muslim worker told the woman that she would only check out her items if the woman would first remove or cover up the cross necklace she was wearing as the cross was offensive to her. The patron asked to speak with the manager who backed up the Muslim employee.

It's interesting to hear my friends up north discuss politics. I won't enter an opinion in your business, but I must say that, at least here in Montana, we love you Canadians--you're good people, as the saying goes.

    Thanks squatman.

ChrisL, I have heard all kinds of stories about all kinds of people having different religious conflicts. It is easy to be offended or be offensive when we are uncertain or incencitive of other people's religions or beliefs systems. I think once or twice I have been offended and offensive all at the same time. I think most times it is about trying and being polite about it if we have any chance of getting along. Once upon a time the residents were wrot with illness brought by the immigrants, and then the immigrants refused to help the people unless they would abandon their religion and language. I would hope that the world has come a long way since then and we can be more educated in how we deal with people who are different than us.

Yes, the Somali cabbies have been known to refuse fares to people that have purchased alcohol. Apparently it has been settled in the courts according to the law of the land not sharia law. So will have to accept the rule of the law of the land or face the consequences. That is as it should be. Not a real problem in the end.

Immigrants/Refugees will go by the law of the land that they are in or face the consequences. It takes a while for them to adjust but they eventually do.

Man if I had a dollar for every time a cabbie refused me because I was intoxicated...
