A good buddy of mine was going on a car trip up into the Smoky Mountains. His girlfriend had a cat and he gave me a key and asked me to go over and feed the thing. Well this was a middle aged female cat who wouldn't give me the time of day if I was visiting there. She was almost nasty to me.

So the first week when I let myself in she was hiding. Nowhere to be found. I cleaned the litter box, put out fresh food and water. After a week she came out and rubbed against my legs. She purred and was as affectionate as could be. This went on for the remaining week my friends were gone.

I came by in the evening after a week of this to feed her again, and my friends had returned. So I went in and was talking with them about the trip, the cat, and what have you. She (the cat) came out into the living room, and once again, wouldn't give me the time of day.

So this scientific study proves that the cat was starved for affection, not for food. Food, water, a clean litter box were all available whether she showed her face or not. It was companionship that she was hungry for after a week of being alone. Once the familiar friends were back I was superfluous.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
