Discussing politics or religion on an international forum is like opening Pandora's Box. Saying that people can choose to not read the discussions isn't going to help. If someone airs his or her views and says they are the correct views, not taking into account that this is something purely subjective, then others are going to want to disagree. And then things spiral out of control.
Other forums I'm on have banned politics and religion even from the "off topic" part of the forum, explaining that there are other forums where such debates are more suitable, just because such discussions tend to disrupt the community and make people leave.
This forum isn't about freedom of speech, as far as I know. It's about straight razors, other shaving paraphernalia, and traditional wetshaving. I think it's perfectly acceptable that there are rules that limit what other discussions are welcome on this site, in order to preserve the community spirit and promote a friendly atmosphere.
If you want to have heated debates about politics, join a political forum. If you want to have heated discussions about religion, join a religious forum. Posting such discussions in the off topic area of a shaving forum is just trolling, in my opinion.
Having said that, I have to admit that politics and religion bore me to death, so I stay the heck away from those topics. But I have seen what such debates can do, and it ain't pretty.
In the end it's up to the forum moderators and site owner(s). Do you want people trolling for political/religious flamewars in the off topic area or not? I think xman has a very valid point in the original post.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanked: 4Think of the break up of Yugoslavia but with rather reserved, up tight and polite people minus the guns and you have and idea of England vs Scotland. Very little actual violence but plenty of slagging.
Majurey. Stalking you, old chap? Most certainly not! It wouldn't be cricket, wot and I might get malkied!

We've been through this I don't know how many times. The problem here and every other forum out there that has an off topic area is the same. people are going to express their opinions and they are going to *iss off others. All the pleas in the world to hold their tongues are a waste of time because its not going to happen. Its the nature of the beast. The only solution is to eliminate the off topic forum and I don't think people would want to do that.
At some point someone will look around and take note of the number of really knowledgable people we have lost because of off topic posts and say is it worth losing this resource in exchange for this banter.
No opinions here but this is just the way it is.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Whew! I don't post over here as often, being a mod on another forum. But it looks like I missed some big fireworks. But I agree that to read, or to post, in an off-topic thread is a completely voluntary thing, and I just choose not to because I DO get too emotional.
Not casting any aspersions, just my own choice.

I just ignore threads on topics I know will go south. Politics, religion, the Dallas Cowboys (MY TEAM!), etc. We had a guy at B&B who went political, we banned the thread, and he kept joining under new names. We just kept banning him. Then he went to SMF to complain. Now, IMO, to get banned from a shaving forum requires a certain kind of stupid. This guy did it twice in one day. I enjoy the jokes and most off topic threads. Certain topics just don't bode well.
