If you were a completely new straight shaver, or even if you hadn't taken the first step of laying a bare blade on your face, you could quite possibly feel that you really wouldn't have much to add to most of the posts in the "On Topic" areas. I tend to take people as I find them. Rather than try to discourage them from being a part of the community (in whatever way they were comfortable with) we should include them in whatever way we can.
An interesting premise, but not one I've found to be typical of a new member in our community. I think you'll find that a high percentage of our members lurked for a while, eventually registered, and then began asking on-topic questions. They participated primarily in the newbie forum for a while, then branched out with posts in other forums. Certainly there were many exceptions... I'm just speaking of what I believe to be the average case.

It's relatively recent that the Off-topic forum became so active with controversial topic threads (although we did have a few last Fall which got very heated and ended with several members leaving the group). This recent trend seems, to some degree, to be attracting its own following... but it's unclear whether this has attracted any new members. It also remains to be seen whether this trend will turn out to be a positive for the majority of our community. I do know that the number of entries on the ignore list is at an all-time high... and that concerns me. Time will tell.

I just want to thank everyone for weighing in on this. You've each made some good points and helped me come to term with it all over again myself. Open dialogue may be messy sometimes, but it's the best medicine I guess. It's kinda like democracy that way.

    Thank-you again, gentlemen.
