Thanked: 110Thats funny... Not only that but as everyone knows all bear encounters happen with the Bear up wind.. You just spritz some up in the air and a small cloud about the size of a Bears head stops right in the its face.. Situation diffused.. Dont argue facts

Thanked: 3223Even funnier is that pepper spray/Mace is a prohibited weapon in Canada. Using bear spray on a human in Canada could lead to charges of possession and use of a prohibited weapon.

I used to work at the downtown YMCA in Winnipeg, which was a) joined to a shopping mall via a corridor, and b) in a neighbourhood that had *serious* gang problems. One afternoon, one of our friendly neighbourhood gang bangers let loose with a can of bear spray in the corridor leading to the mall. If you ever need to clear a corridor... man, that stuff has some kick. I was far enough away when it happened not to be affected, but was kept busy for quite a while helping those who had been.
The fact grizzlies just get a bit annoyed by it makes me respect those big beasties all the more.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 110You know Bob now that you said that I remember it is illegal.. One of the guys that used to come with on our Fly Ins was terrified of Bears and would bring spray up in his bag.. We got stopped at the Soo one time and they found it in his luggage . They were cool about it and just informed us its Illegal and confiscated it . That was the last time our Marine went with us

Thanked: 110That stuff is NASTY!! Worked in a ER for many years and one time a guest of ours was getting quite unruly so we had to get PD.. The guest was not listening orders very well and he came out into Staff area.. PD let loose of the spray on him.. Almost caused a very bad situation as it got a lot of employees quite badly and it hung around for a long time. I got just a whiff and it irritated a lot. Like you said it is amazing Bears use it as cologne.. And by the way.. The PD changed tactics and now just taze folks like that.. Found that way kept our employees at work..

Thanked: 3223No, bear spray is not illegal here as you can buy it in the stores as far as I know. What is illegal here is if you use it on humans not bears. That may then put it into the prohibited weapons class. It is Mace that you can't import or make in Canada and is considered a prohibited weapon regardless of whom you might use it on. All these sprays have the same basic ingredient but in varying percentages. It also depends on how the border people interpret things or had a bad night.
Never worried too much about black bears and attacks on humans are rare and fatalities extremely rare. Griz and Polar Bear are a whole other story.

Thanked: 110I bet that is what Larry had in his bag.. They were quite small canister so it was probably Mace.. And i cant remember ever hearing any stories of bear vs humans while at Outfitter docks when coming in or out of trip.. And as you know there are a lot of Outfitters using the same Bays as there base so a lot of people conversing about how the week was etc.. Pretty sure i would have remembered a bad Bear story.. Does not take away the uneasy feeling of having a Black on the deck or knocking on the door asking for sugar .. A good way to let you know or scare them from coming on the deck was to string up Beer cans close together for noise.. But doing fly Ins you have a weight limit so bringing brews in was either no or would have to pay a ton of money to have them bring in beers a few days of the week.. We chose liquor..

Thanked: 110We Flew out of Nakina a number of times and two times guys were taking their dogs to you in Thunder Bay because they got chewed up pretty bad.. I imagine that dogs getting chumped by the bears is pretty frequent?
