It is a tragic and sad situation.
To put that into perspective, that same out break in the US with an estimated population of 330 million for 2019 would have caused:

roughly 6,600,000 infections/cases

roughly 115,500 deaths most of which would be children

Imagine the strain on the health care system and the costs too if that were to happen. It hasn't due mostly to a vaccination program. Disclaimer, my math ain't the greatest so feel free to do your own calculations.
