Update on Somoa.
Population is just under 200,000
They have 4,000 ish active case.
Confirmed dead of 62, and expect it to rise over 70. All primary school age children.
It is a tragic and sad situation.

To put that into perspective, that same out break in the US with an estimated population of 330 million for 2019 would have caused:

roughly 6,600,000 infections/cases

roughly 115,500 deaths most of which would be children

Imagine the strain on the health care system and the costs too if that were to happen. It hasn't due mostly to a vaccination program. Disclaimer, my math ain't the greatest so feel free to do your own calculations.

Very interesting discussion.

When we talk, "climate change", very few people provide the full definition, which is, "man-made climate change".

Take a look at India, China, Pakistan, where we have a population bomb, basically a 3rd of the world's population crammed together - approx 3.5 BILLION PEOPLE. Population of the USA and Canada combined is approx 370 million, we'd barely make two big cities there.

Nature is an efficient housekeeper, and like the Black Plague swept over a third of the population of Europe off the map, it's just a matter of time before something lands in one of these densely packed countries and decimates the population.

As BobH mentioned, with the ability to travel from one side of the globe to the next, we can only hope that vaccinations, and research is kept up when some horror disease lands.

I remember the Swine Flu, my first girlfriend had it and survived, and the more people that don't get vaccinated, the more probability these diseases have a chance to mutate and develop into something far more lethal, which we know has already occured.

I'm in the camp that if you aren't vaccinated, which is fine, your choice, but the consequences are you get homeschooled, and you basically should be quarantined in your own house of community. Your freedom of choice ends at the tip of other people's noses - your choice doesn't mean my consequence.

As for my man-made climate change remark, as long as the population continues to rise exponentially in these countries and the poverty associated with it, the chances for a lethal brew-up increase dramatically, drop that into one of these over-populated, densely packed countries, and the carnage will be unparalleled.

With the rich in these countries ensuing rush to escape, how many hours till it lands here?

That is exactly why the wealthy countries should look very favourable on ensuring there is a viable immunization program in those other countries. With immigrants, they should be required to have all their shots before entry. To do otherwise by stopping immigration would be akin to the rich using all the life boats on a sinking ship leaving the poor to drown. Sometimes by helping others you are really also helping yourself in the long run. It is not all altruism driven.

At one time they used to paint a mark on the outside of a house or apartment if certain diseases were there which made quarantine much easier. Of course in those days they didn't have drugs they have now and most folks looked upon hospitals as places of death not healing.

We will always have disease as human's number one enemy and the potential to wipe us out is far greater than any dictator or atomic war or wayward meteor.

LOL - I'm all for immigration, just make sure everyone gets their shots.

It's the panic and flight to other countries when the plague bomb hits that has me worried, sorry, been a bad, "Andromeda Strain" day, but it's getting close to dinner, so now I'm worried about famine, so did you know Soylent Green is MADE OUT OF PEOPLE!!!!!

While we're on the subject of presidents. What's this leader of the free world rubbish?

I'm originally from England and I can assure everyone here that our Prime Ministers did not ask permission from any other country before they acted upon anything, Nato excepted of course - and Brussels but we are so impressed by the EU were going to be seeing that in the rear view mirror.

Incidentally, I had all my shots as a kid and more recently, Flu shot and Pneumonia shot. I'm knocking on a bit (57) and recently spent time in hospital so I can do without some nasty and preventable illness.

Since Phrank brought up the issue of the inevitable pandemics in the near future, I'll toss another monkey wrench into the discussion. We are approaching the end of the era of antibiotics' ability to control bacterial infections; from what I am reading, we are already there with some strains of STD's, tuberculosis, MRSA, various staph and strep strains. I foresee our health care infrastructures being overwhelmed even in developed countries within the near future.

from what i understand that is a result of the over use of antibiotics and focusing so hard on one strain of the disease. It allows other strains to take over. It's been noted that even if you get the chicken pox vaccine you are more likely to get a more severe case of shingles later in life, probably because your immune system has been weekend from not being exposed to the chicken pox (and re building your immune system to it) through out your life (since people aren't getting it anymore).
