Thanked: 556As a child I got the measles that went into my eyes. I had to be in a darkened room for a week or two. Our family doctor came over several times to see me. I guess it was possible that my eyesight could have been impaired as a result of the infection. This was serious stuff.
Chicken pox was a walk in the park in comparison. I think if I have a choice I would like to opt out of shingles. My father in law had them and it was painful.
Never got the mumps, but did get the vaccine as an adult and am keeping my ____ crossed that it works.
Wife and I got the twinrix vaccinations and a whole bunch of other shots before travelling to Bhutan via Thailand and Japan. Never regretted that and had no side effects. Same with our annual flu inoculations.
I have no problem with folks choosing to opt out of vaccinations. I have a huge problem with them expecting our health care system (we have a pretty good one up here north of the border - you should take a look) to care for them when they get sick and causing others to get sick as a result.David

A coworker returned to work after missing a few of days.
He wasn't feeling well and went to the doctor that recommended among other things the flu vaccine. He said the vaccine beat the @3$# out of him.
In My opinion don't get a vaccine if you are not feeling well already.
Another thought a bout vaccines. I have read the following.
"The only people who should definitely not get this vaccine are pregnant women and anyone who has ever had a severe allergic reaction to Shingrix or any of its ingredients."
OK, I know if I am pregnant but unless I have already taken this vaccine how do I know if I am allergic to it???????

The problem is, when you "risk the flu", you are also making that decision for EVERYONE YOU COME INTO CONTACT WITH. If that includes people who are, for whatever reason, immuno-compromised (the elderly, cancer patients, diabetics, etc.). You are, therefore, risking the lives of not just yourself, but those around you. It's irresponsible and not supported by the science.

I feel much the same about the anti-vaxxers. Feel free to not inoculate your kids . . . but then you should also feel free to home school the little plague monkeys, and don't let them outside to play with other kids.
People are free to make choices for themselves. They are NOT free to make those choices for others, or make others assume risks they do not want.

I caught Measles when I was around 2 years old. My older brother got it and the docs warned my parents to keep him away from me which they didn't do. This was around 1950 so no cures for it and in those days docs made house calls and the doc spent the entire night at our house. He sent my dad out at 3AM scouring the city for ice which they packed all around me. I had seriously high fever and the doc wanted to send me to the hospital and I remember my dad arguing with him. He was trying to reason with him that the fever I had could cause subtle brain damage which might not be discovered until years later.
Well obviously I survived but you really don't mess with these diseases especially when you can avoid them.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

You make an incorrect assumption. That the flu vaccine gives you 100% immunity & protects everyone, when in fact this year it was only 29% effective according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a doctor was talking to a nurse concerning a patient that they didn't know what he had, he recommended a pizza diet.
The nurse said I don't want to question your judgement doctor but why the pizza diet?
He said it is the healthiest thing that I can think of that is able to slide under the door..............

We shouldn't lose sight of the fact the flu vaccine is an outlier in that it's one of a very very few vaccines that can have poor effectiveness. Most give complete protection or very close to it.
Even if you still get the flu after vaccination you should have a milder case or so they say.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
