Yes, like the article says, fatal black bear attacks are rare but if you are very unlucky they do happen. It's like getting hit by lightening and what are the odds on that happening. Unfortunately that is scant comfort to the victim and their family.

We moved from Elliot Lake where we lived for 10 years (ignore the retirement living adverts, it's the pits).

Elliot Lake is 20 odd miles from the main road (Trans Canada) and surrounded on all sides by the backwoods.

We used to open our door a crack to make sure there was nothing in the drive before we stepped out at night.

Our garbage cans all had teeth holes in them, the bears used to drag the garbage into the back yard and have a picnic. We didn't dare scare them because they would have gone right over the fence and flattened it.

Often we could hear the police tying to scare one of with their banger guns.

I had never seen a bear when i arrived from England and was quite nervous of them but we had so many in the drive and garden and spent so many hours clearing the garbage back into the bin that I got fed up with them and a bit complacent I guess.

What is the ratio of live bear to carcass?

    Pig 60%. Has the skin.

    Cow 50%.

Sheep 40%. And I think deer are similar. Sheep have lots of wool live.

If I bone a deer it is about 4 times the volume of the head that I get in meat.

Many people eat wild game ground and with sauces or cook the meat similar to chicken. No wonder it tastes like chicken etc.

The best meat is Vegan and with a little salt and a bit of pepper.

    One of the best meals I have ever ate was Woodchuck camping over a fire that was burnt on the outside and raw in the middle............ {I was about 9 years old.}

    The atmosphere made it great!

Going back a few pages I would argue.that there is no such thing as "innocent animals." Not to get on religion too much but I hold that since the fall there is no innocence. Aside from that if you ever saw cows shaking uncontrollably going down the shoot after they have lived a stockyard existence you might feel differently about that bear's life: doing whatever he saw fit in his natural environment until he suddenly drops.
I don't bash people who don't hunt. That's your choice. My brother lost his stomach for killing livestock when we were kids. It's not a value judgement. You either can or you can't. It never bothered me. Although I do feel compassion for the animal as it spends it's final moments. What does bother me is irresponsible hunting. By that I mean taking shots you can't make or killing for sport or in excess. If I can't or won't eat it I don't kill it... except for varments. I know guys that will shoot deer or hogs in the he butt and let it bleed out. That boils my blood. How would you like to have someone pop a random hole in you and look at their watch waiting for you to drop?
I commend you for the life you lead. I would love to live that life but unfortunately I have a citified bride who keeps me living in suburbia. At least I get to hunt. She won't eat it (my kids love game meat) but at least she doesn't TRY to forbid me.
I too have never had bear. There are lots of th here but hunting is very limited. As far as alligator, in Florida you get worn out on it. I find it rather bland. I'd rather eat rattlesnake.

A groundhog is basically a big prairie dog. They're both giant burrowing squirrels. I HATE squirrels. Bastards dig up my garden. Technically that makes them a varmint... Please refer to my earlier post.

Edit: The difference is I'll eat a squirrel... In the right season. They get these nodes on them here in the summertime. Yuck!
