No, what I meant was that I read the quote with freedom meaning freedom for both US and non-US citizens. While I got the impression that John and mhailey read it more as freedom for non-US citizens (or "non-whatever country" when comparing).

Canada and France helped the US gain independence a long time ago.
The UN sent peace keeping troops to several problem areas like rwanda.
    We have troops in afghanistan.
A friend of mine did several tours in bosnia.
The French foreign legion had a very important role in the first gulf war.

Individual body counts are not as high as that of the US in recent years, but then again, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not purely for freedom either.
Afghanistan was about getting OBL, and the pretext of Iraq were the supposed WMDs and ties with al-qaeda.

All wars are dirty. I believe that truly fighting for freedom itself is something people only do for their own country.
I really hope that one day we don't have to have wars anymore, but I doubt I will live to see the day.

I guess I should have been more clear Bruno! I was trying to point out how quickly this could become a pissing match and not the least bit constructive!

I guess it all depends on how you idefine the word freedom.

Of course this is about the speech of a politician running for office. His words are meant to inspire pride nationalism and fellow feeling far more than they might be meant to be factual. Especially when spoken on this day. I would take them in that light.

Not that I dislike Fred Thompson (our next president) but he might have better expressed what he wanted to say, however, I don't think he meant anything negative by it.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

Won't you get in trouble saying that Fred will be Prez and living in A2?
