Thanked: 150Yeah, if there's no other way then to go through with it, I say do it for the least cost to you, sign whatever final papers there may be, put the pen down and give the agent a solid right hook to the trachea.
He shouldn't be writing up contracts and reassuring either party in legal terms if he does not FULLY understand the legal jargon and any possible interpretations of the contract's wording.
And don't worry about him pressing charges he'll probably screw up the wording in the police report and charge himself with assault.

Thanked: 1587Update
Well, it turns out the buyers are very nice people! Our solicitor has been talking to their solicitor, and they've offered to amend the contract and let us stay in the house rent and mortgage free for four weeks after the settlement date! That's actually better than what we wanted in the first place, which was enough time to confidently put an offer on something else.
In return, we've decided to give them a bit of flexibility around the unconditional date - they need to have an unconditional offer on their property by a certain date or our deal falls through. Fingers crossed, 'cause I think we've found where we want to live.
We spoke to the real estate agent yesterday and told him how unhappy we were with how he'd handled the contract and outlined the issues we had. It was a fairly difficult discussion, as neither my wife nor myself especially enjoy confrontation, but it was one we needed to have. In some ways we copped out, because we told him we had a few ideas and asked him to think about it and get back to us on what he thought a resolution might be... We'll see.
So anyway, an updated list of things we've learned:
1. Don't sign anything without legal advice;
2. We are lucky bastards;
3. Don't give off newb vibes to real estate people.
Thanks for all the input guys. We were feeling a bit powerless but the advice you all gave, even if we don't take some of it in the end, made us realise there are things we can do. Thank you.

Well it's easy for people giving advice to talk tough but it looks like you kept a cool head and maybe things worked out the best because of this. It's amazing, but sometimes you'll actually run into genuine people who understand a tough situation, and respond like actual human beings ---

Thanked: 150btw, I think that most of us "advocating" violence were joking in an attempt to lighten the mood. You handled it well; firmly, but very much like a gentleman, as can be expected of any patron of this message board.
Just keep your head about you and your "eyes" open, as the deal is not done, and pitfalls line the unseen road.
