Default Other Hobbies? ...personally, I like knives.

What kinds of cool things do ya'll do outside of your day job and this place?

I am an amateur bladesmith and general knife enthusiast. Knives are the tools that I use in my other hobbies such as cooking and woodworking so I've come to develop a fondness for sharpened steel that is above average (cant figure out why I was so hooked by straight razors though...).

Here are some pics of a recent pair of knives that I made for family members, they are similar but also different. Both have Afzelia Burl scales, stainless liners and damascus blades in a similar shape. But they are different sizes, one has nickel silver bolsters while the other has damascus and the patterns on the blades are different.

The first two are of one knife, the other two are of the other.

Any criticism by other knife nuts would be welcomed, as I'm in this to grow and improve.

    Thanks

Other hobbies??? Once rad, bad, etc sets in who's got time for other hobbies.

Actually, the hobbies that have taken a back seat to straights are:

    • Genealogy,
    • Amateur "Ham" Radio-my call sign is KD5AFE,
    • collect walking sticks-they're like my razors-have to use 'em so why not enjoy them.
    • collect buffalo figurines,
    • collect smoking pipes (I use those on occasion as well)
    • and recently started collecting hats. I was given an old bowler to go along with my fedora and numerous western hats in both felt and straw. (You've never lived till you've worn a bowler in public-especially when wearing an eye patch and using a cane...man the looks I got
    • collect pocket knives

Why I had the idea about window decals for our cars was, that was how I used to make my living, before I was disabled and before they closed down our plant and moved it all to Mass.

I tinker with RC cars now and then, I've had one sitting around for sometime as I never got around to soldering up and mounting the motor and speed control. Since I was building the little box for electrolysis I decided I'd go ahead and get my car ready to run soon too. Still haven't run it yet, but should do 40+ mph, the buggy did about 25+ mph before I put in the brushless motor that's in it now, haven't run it since but should be around 30+ mph now when I run it again. Both still need a little more tweaking before I can drive them again. Buggy is a team losi BK2 and the car is a team losi JRXS (not the type-R). The car has a really hot speed control and motor in it, it's a Schulze U-force 75 (60A continuous up to 90A) with a Hacker C40 brushless motor. Haven't run either since going brushless. Last pic is the little box for electrolysis (lowering amperage from my power supply for RC Cars) I have all of the stuff for that and plan on putting a razor in tomorrow now.

Well cooking was a hobby and an interest ever since I could breath and then I turned that into a career. So that has to be the #1 hobby. Of course as part of this hobby, I collect knives.

I've had a fascination about Bonsai almost as long, and after I moved here, I made sure to get myself bonsai lessons. It's very educational and I been going to Bonsai classes for a year now, and it never gets boring.

I collect books of matches, not sure what it is, but I have some kind of obsession with them. Boxed matches are just boring. My wife says its considered bad luck to collect matches, don't know why.

I also collect mechanical pencils, must be .5mm. I heard though that theres a new pencil that takes liquid graphite, so gotta get my hands on one of them one day. Also have a stationery AD. Paper, writing pads, erasers, whiteout etc etc.

Last but not least, I got into making Rosary beads for a while, but the novelty has kind of worn off temporarily, whilst I am busy.

    There you go.

If I am any judge of human nature, I would say that collecting matchbooks is bad luck because your wife doesn't want you to collect them!

I ride bicycles on and off road. Mostly off road. Tobacco pipes, smoke and collect them. Old pocket knives and I occasionally build tattoo machines.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Cool! I've built a few tattoo machines for one of my childhood friends who is now a damn good tattoo artist.

Oh, and it's great to see some people joining in.

O_S, I don't have a formal collection but I do have a strange habit of picking up match books at restaurants and bars even though I don't smoke.
