Thank you Sticky
For those of you too narrow minded to read the article He has linked to, here's an important statistic from it.
Keep in mind this is a city where every head of household is required to own a gun.
"After the law went into effect in 1982, crime against persons plummeted 74 percent compared to 1981, and fell another 45 percent in 1983 compared to 1982. And it has stayed impressively low. In addition to nearly non-existent homicide (murders have averaged a mere 0.19 per year), the annual number of armed robberies, residential burglaries, commercial burglaries, and rapes have averaged, respectively, 1.69, 31.63, 19.75, and 2.00 through 1998."
They live in a decent neighborhood, not bad, but not great. It's close to the local university, reasonably well kept up...
there are 16 hopuses on their street, and they are the 3rd house from the north end. The next door neighbors have left their garage door open for years without incident. I wouldn't be surprised if they left the door unlocked for that matter.
5 houses down the neighbors don't have it as easy, one neighbor has had the top cut on his Mustang convertible 5 times in the last 2 years. They take the CD player, and trash the inside of his car in the process. We've had other problems with the vehicles in that part of our street, yet I can park my convertable out in front of my parent's house for a week unlocked and it's untouched.
Why would it be so different just 5 houses down?
Maybe because when ever there is a problem, my dad is seen standing out in front of his house with a gun in hand. That's it, he's the dangerous crazy guy with all the guns, keep your kids away from there... right?
Then again he's also been the one that all the neighbors instruct their kids to go to in an emergency, for the last 25 years. If something bad was happening on our block from a fight to a medical emergency, the kids would run to my parent's house.
My dad's put out fires, chased off drug addicts and dealers... The police know him well, and treat him with respect.
And most importantly, the crime rate on his end of the street is less than 1/10th of any other part of their neighborhood.
Criminals want an easy unarmed target. It's not worth risking your life for a score, they all want that easy score. Easy target, easy money, no risks involved...
Arm the population, and all of the easy scores become death traps, criminals will look for something else to do, either crimes that won't get them shot, or real honest work.

Found this last night. It's about an hour and a half long, though.

Fear the government that fears your guns.
