Personally, I don't understand the whole fascination with banning people from an online forum. Yes, there are times when people egregiously break rules and must be dealt with but most of the time people make honest mistakes. Say, "don't do that anymore," and move on.
What's the deal?!?

Thanked: 953Very respectfully, that's a shame. You are not alone.
I got a PM from one of their moderators over Memorial Day weekend giving me a four point sanction for ungentlemanly behavior for mentioning a vendor that competes with one of their other moderators in a post that I had made made at several weeks earlier - I don't think my post actually violated their rules incidentally because it didn't link to the "offending" site, but that's neither here nor there - I suspect he was really docking me for criticizing Joel for smearing a vendor a couple of days before that, but who knows.
Anyway, I couldn't believe that the moderator had nothing better to do on Memorial Day weekend than "catch up on his banning" - I was having a nice weekend with my wife and little girls and watching things about the troops, and I remember just wondering how lonely this guy must be that on a holiday weekend he's taking the time to send petty PMs to assert his "authority". I also thought it was pretty funny that they are so into the art of banning that they actualy have a point system.
There are probably 5,000 great guys that post there and a handful of very very important twenty-something moderators that are "prickly" as someone put it, but it's a shame.

Sorry to burst your bubble....but most larger forums do. As do we. It's called an infraction system. That way we can pretty much keep track of troublemakers if needs be.

Infraction system??
Mods, oh mods, is there somewhere we can see how many infractions we have been given (earned)? Are the pluses and minuses each given a different color to make for quicker scanning? Do the positive merits counteract negative demerits? If we've been bad and then become really good, can we get a hug?
Will you give me any warning before you yank my plug?

The only infraction I know of at this point - and you can check my title there - is the one for spamming. That particular infraction earns a person a lifetime ban.
As long as a member follows the rules - which boil down to acting civilly and respectfully - you'll never have a problem with SRP. It's pretty simple.

To further qualify: we have an infraction system, simply because it is part of any forum software in existence.
We don't actually use it, except for allowing mods to instantly ban spammers. It is not set up to do anything else but that.
We've discussed it, and decided unanimously that that was not the way we want to run this place. We are not school teachers handing out bad grades and keeping score. Mistakes happen. If we would invent and enforce a point system, that would mean we would be forgetting what this place is all about: fostering a community.
And imo, that is not something you do from within an untouchable ivory tower.Last edited by Bruno; 08-14-2008 at 03:20 PM.

Thanked: 335Dear mods,
Thank you. With your reassurances I'll be able to sleep tonight and shave with a steady hand tomorrow morning.
and maybe I'll have a Spam sandwich for lunch.
