i have a problem
well to start i just moved due to my fiance wanting to move. and things are not going well for the simple fact my work history is kinda screwed up so its hard for me to get a job, not to mention i look like a freak but i keep that pretty well covered up. we are staying with her father so that being said if i cant get to work soon i will not have a place to stay, and i am running out of money. i am thinking Army. now that all of that is out of the way maybe i can to my question. can anyone here tell me whether or not they would turn me down for having my face tattooed? and any other in would be appreciated

Thanked: 271Wow, these are big questions and you're going to have to provide more information during the conversation to really get some useful feedback. That said, my first reaction is that it depends on how much contact you would have with the public, for example, if you were an auto mechanic and worked in the shop with your head under the hood, I doubt that anyone would care, but they might not want you at the front desk of a hotel. So, what I would like to know is how big a town do you live in and what are your skills?

I think your best bet is to just call a recruitment center and ask.
I am not US nor military, but I seem to remember that you would only be turned away if you had offensive tattoos. Offensive being either obscene or racist. For example the swastika, or gang tattoos.
Still, the only one who can tell for sure are our military members, or the actual recruitment officers.
Best of luck to you and I hope you get accepted.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I got out of the Army in October. As of right now, you can't get in with facial tattoos, however, your best bet is going to be trying the Army. Best case scenario, you get a waiver and they take you. They can also ask that you have the tats removed, or flat out refuse you entry. Won't cost a dime to see a recruiter. Don't even try the other services with facial tattoos though. Good Luck.

How about getting into a career that puts you around like-minded people? They wouldn't really care about your tats and you'd probably enjoy your work more.

I employ quite a few people with facial tattoos, but that's in the tattoo and piercing industry.
I think that your options are going to be based on the area that you're in. If you're in a larger city, specifically one with a "trendy" area, your chances of finding a job outside of the industry are going to be better. On the flip side, if it's a smaller town, well...
Warehouse, mill and factory employers don't seem to mind too much. Temp agencies may be a good place to look as well.
If you're only looking into the Army as a last chance and you don't really want to be there, personally I would suggest that you exhaust any and all options before signing up.

Believe it or not, Starbucks is a good employer. One of the Paramedics I work withs wife is a manager at one. She said they start out around ten an hour, an promote from within. They like to hire people who are a little different in appearances too. You could look into construction. Be an electrician or plumbers helper for awhile, then get your own license. Long as you can do the job, they don't care what you look like. Be willing to work hard, and you'll do alright.

Thanked: 150The starbucks around here start you out at $6 or $7 an hour, but they do hire some cool people.
Construction work is usually pretty lenient on appearances, as is any kind of maintenance.
I had a buddy that started a lawn service and did so well during the summer that he didn't have to work over the winter, but he lives a pretty bare bones lifestyle.Last edited by Russel Baldridge; 08-14-2008 at 07:20 PM.

Thanked: 586Two years ago the U.S. Marine Corps placed a regulation banning tattoos. I would think the Army, Navy and Air Force are pretty similar. During my latest hospitization, the girlfriend of my roomate was complaining that Starbucks changed their mind about the tattoos she had on her hands and fired her.
In the world in which I live, having tattoos on your face places you in the ranks of the unemployable. Certainly you can work in some jobs where more radical appearance is acceptable such as selling funky clothes or CD's. Some bars and nightclubs that cater to the goth crowd. There's always the night watchman security type gigs. And like Herman Melville's Queequeg from Moby Dick, you can always pursue a rewarding career in whaling.
