My thought is that since an independent is not likely to ever receive enough votes to win we should vote for the candidate that at least espouses less government and shows some record of doing such, and then force them to live up to their word as we did with the last amnesty package!

Good luck with that! It hasnt worked yet, we as a people need to figure it out, when you turn away from the right fist the left will hit you and vice versa. The great problem is that people are so well entrenched in their political bias they refuse to see the negatives of their golden boy, they make the same mistakes over and over again expecting a better result! It wont happen. Its the boys in the smoke filled back rooms that promote and influence these people, The election process is little more than a charade. They treat the average voter as nothing but a useful fool. The only reason an independent will not make it is because we the people are too emotionally tied to our current political pimps and will not break free from the cycle of abuse. Whos your daddy?!
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Thanked: 50I keep wanting to start a thread on the difference between Democrats and Republicans (I've been both), but frankly, I don't get on often enough to keep an eye on it. And I mean the real differences, not the sound bytes. Both parties have real, coherent philosophies that are defensible, and we need both, not least as a balance, one against the other. For example, Democrats defend individual freedom. Republicans defend individual responsibility. What is one without the other?
The best thing that ever happened to the Democrats was the election of 1994. They'd gone too far and were more interested in their own jobs than in what they supposedly went to Washington for. They needed a reality check and they got it. Now, they're far more fiscally responsible, willing to discuss balanced budgets, and able to embrace a conservative viewpoint if necessary. The Republicans are getting the same lesson in 2006-08. They've lost their way and need to be kicked in the teeth (which will happen tomorrow, god willing).
In other words, a two-party system works just fine if you throw them out from time to time.
I'm signing off now, before I go on at length on the fundamental differences between the two parties (HINT: It's economic).
