    Default People still throw acid?

    Woman blinded by acid wants same fate for attacker - CNN.com

    This kid "loved" a classmate, and when she didn't return his affection, he threatened her, then threw acid on her face, disfiguring her and blinding her. What the hell?

    The concept of basing punishment on An Eye For An Eye is interesting. I wonder what effect introducing a similar system in the West would have on crime?

    In some countries throwing acid is, like honor killing, a custom among some of the population. Strange that we humans are such a mix of brutality for some and kindness and charity from others. Sometimes within the same individual. The sort of thing Robert Burns expressed so well ;

    Many and sharp the numerous ills
    Inwoven with our frame;
    More pointed still, we make ourselves
    Regret, remorse and shame;
    And man, whose heaven-erected face
    The smiles of love adorn,
    Man's inhumanity to man,
    Makes countless thousands mourn.

    Robert Burns

    Where exactly does one get a jar of face-melting acid?

    If I remember the story I read a long time ago, it is acid sold for car batteries, and is pretty widely available in certain regions. Hydrochloric acid perhaps? maybe sulphuric?

    1. you can buy strong H2SO4 at most auto shops, it is used for topping off batteries.
    2. this type of justice is known more formally as "lex talionis"

    Makes perfect sense to me. It is just. It is fair. It is not particularly humane, but neither was what that coward did. I like to think that here in Texas, he'd have been put to death for his actions. Society is better off without people like that.

    I fail to see the controversy. The police acted as police should. I'd do the same thing if I was attacked. That's not even lex talionis, it's straight up self defense.

    This might help clear it up a bit more why there is such a controversy

    amyn, maybe i'm missing the point. if the cops have a shoot out with criminals and the criminals die, how is that different from when SWAT goes in and there is a "shots fired" situation here in the states. true enough, detaining assailants is the goal, but officers tend to make sure their buddies get home rather than care about cuffing perps. sounds to me that the police over there just make pulling the trigger a priority. no big deal.
