First of all, it depends on the age of the kid. At some point you have to let them figure things out for themselves. You can guide, but you can't force. From what I saw when I was younger, most parents who tried to force things on their kids only succeeded in making them rebel harder.
My mother didn't freak when I was in the phase where I listened to bodycount and other groups with questionable lyrics.
She didn't freak when I was virtually always with my sensei instead of at home.
She didn't freak when I old her I'd do kickboxing during the summer holiday.
She didn't freak when I told her one late spring day that I didn't feel like going to school anymore that year (last year Masters Degree), but instead spent all my time simply studying at home.
She didn't freak when I came home early in the morning, with too much beer in my body, and then went to jiu-jitsu class to help teach the kids.
Instead she let me make my own choices, guided me on the way, was there for me whenever I needed her, and gave me advice when I needed it.
In the end, I turned out allright. Most kids are intelligent enough to make the right choices and learn things for themselves.
Btw I still like bodycount, rage against the machine, rammstein, and lots of other groups with sometimes questionable lyrics. just because it sounds great doesn't mean I agree with all the lyrics.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

How old were you? I think it is up to the parents to decide when a kid is old enough for that level of responsibility. I'll talk to you in a few years when my daughter is doing things I don't want her to (besides throwing food off her tray and peeing on me as I carry her to the bath!)
From the sound of it, when she allowed it, you were ready for it. Good for her and for you!
My parents, I will be the first to say, let me have WAY too much leeway when I was younger. There were times that a little tough love was EXACTLY what I needed and didn't get. I lived through it for NO reason other than dumb luck, grace of God, call it what you will.

in the vein of these bands and this discussion...
Did you know that many parents ban their children from listening to music just because it sounds evil. To counter-act this, Rammstein (or maybe Tool...I think it was Tool) released a song called "Satan Cake." The song was sung entirely in german, and sounded evil and dark, when in reality it was a recipe for cake, singing:
"Add one egg,
preheat the oven to 325,
Ensure you've mixed the batter thoroughly"
etc...
I just think that's the perfect response to criticism.

What's a "SHARP skin"?
I've been a hippy and a punk. I wore those baggy jeans and chains, and I wore nothing but sandals. Currently, I'm a man...that's all the classification there can be.

16 and upwards.
My mother had a very simple principle: as long as you get passing grades every year, it is your decision as to how you do it. So I got passing grades every year.
And the fact that I spent half of my 'class' time in the pool hall during my first year, or at the company where I was doing an internship (my last year) or simply at home... it didn't matter. I graduated with honors.
The same applied for going out. As long as I didn't get sick in the house, and as long as I didn't sleep until noon, and as long as my studies didn't suffer, it was ok.
Same applied for spending nearly every waking hour with my sensei. I was off the streets and under supervision of someone who had a good influence over me.
been there, done that, got puked over from head to toe.
It's a rite of passage.
Yeah. My mother is awesome. I could talk with her about anything and everything. Nothing fazes her. Never did.
I've had friends tell me they'd do anything to have parents like mine. Because my parents were the only ones they knew who were normal, and whom you could actually talk to
I try to be like my parents, now that I have kids myself.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Thanked: 586Uh Oh. Your son will likely be singing that song when he goes on Boy Scout camping trips.
I happen to think it's a boring and saccharin song(my girlfriend is part of a group that does nothing but this sort of thing and I gotta tell ya, well, nevermind) but what's wrong with promoting peacful co-existance on the Earth?
