Couldn't agree more with what has been said above. I, myself, do not have any tattoos, but have thought about it seriously. It should definitely mean something to you, and not simply one of those images you chose off of a wall....
Jimmy, I like what you wrote about it being cool, it's very true! It's only cool when you do it for yourself and not just to be cool.

They're not for me, but it's a matter of individual choice, and some people choose them well and carry them well. But, echoing what's been said about designs off the wall, please no more "thorn bracelets" around the biceps, Chinese characters on the neck, ass antlers (great phrase, I'd never heard it but knew instantly what it referred to) ... well, I should shut up, I'm getting all curmudgeonly and probably offending somebody with just such a tattoo; didn't intend to. All of those designs had meaning to the people who first started using them, certainly. It's just when you see the same things over and over, on hordes of what you feel sure are sheltered upper-middle-class suburban kids trying to be hip, that an old codger like me starts wanting to yell, "Get offa my lawn!" at them.

I do not oppose tattoos in principle. I have seen several I thought were tasteful and well done. I have considered one (or some) myself. But I could never decide on one I wanted enough to carry to my grave.
Again, agreed that they should not just be something that looks 'mass produced' by a graphics shop. It should commemorate something like the day you nearly died and survived by the narrowest of margins, or possibly the birth of a child. It should mark some monumental event in your life.
And that friends, was my two cents worth.

Ray, you can go off people you know. Tattoo's - check, tongue stud - check! Issue??
Brad I think you may be thinking of your surgery thread. Your ink is flashed in the post op pic's you posted.I can't remember them making it over on Ink Slingers. And thanks for posting the link for the thread, I'm sure there are some newer members wanting to share their ink too.

I am thinking about a cross somewhere. The thing is that I will probably wear a uniform most of my career and it would be nice to be able to use short sleeved shirts in the summer, so it will most likely be on my chest.
In my opinion a tattoo should be at least the size of my palm, anything less would look strange on a man.

Some people put crosses and other religious symbols on the back near the shoulder, so the chosen deity can "sit on there shoulder" or "Watch there back". Others put near the heart on the chest for obvious reasons.
Your Deity, your decision.
