    Default Tattoos

Just a general question that is guaranteed to spark some kind of debate.

What is your position on Tattoos? Should they be left to the "tribes" of the world? Are they still seen as "anti-social behavior"?

I have several and they are all meaningful to me and I have only been inked during important times or with important times looming.

I am planning on finishing up a half sleeve by December on my left arm. Finish up the right are by next December.

My friends can't get past the pain or the permanency. So they think I've gone round the bend as it were. Come to think of it, they have always believed that I was off my nut.

Well you have tattoos and intend to get more, shave your face with a straight razor........ case closed. BTW, I have 'em too so you might say it takes one to know one. Here I am putting one on another nut . As far as your getting another, makes sense to me.

My next is going to be a coverup from a really bad job. Been meaning to do it for years, finally figured out what I am doing with it.

Where is your shop? I am heading to the east coast this fall.

They are pretty much mainstream now. I have one and plan on getting more when the inspiration hits me. They should not be taken lightly though. I never understood pulling a design off the wall. The design should mean something to you.

All the shops I have gone to have had NO flash on the wall or very little if it was close to a college.

The guy that I went to in Cincinnati did one on my left are and his apprentice did my right and designed it.

I am going to Adorn here in PDX to get my new ones.

I've got a couple. I agree that getting flash off the wall is super-lame, you should have some kind of personal meaning there, I mean it's literally under your skin.

As for the pain and the permanency, I think the pain is part of the experience. As the artist who did my last tat (actually, one on me and a matching one on my wife) told me, "it's all about the pain, man. the ink's just a souvenir."

I used to think (good) tattoos were pretty cool. I still do really, but the problem now is that so many girls are getting them to advertise to the world that they are, how can I put this politely, "cheap" and/or potential/actual porn stars. Kinda ruins it for people who get tattoos for better reasons.

Making a personal statement with a tattoo is cool, unless that statement is "look at me I'm such a nasty skank."

That sums it up. Of course it takes the obligatory tongue stud to confirm what the tattoo suggests.

I started getting tattoos long before it was fashionable. Jack London (before my time) said,"Show me a man with a tattoo and I'll show you a man with an interesting past." Now if you want to be different the cool thing to do is to not get a tattoo.

If you are getting a tattoo not to be 'cool' but just because you like tattoos that is cool. Below is what tattooer extradonaire and wisenheimer Jack Rudy printed up some years ago .... for your enjoyment.

Edit, Jack also famously said,"I felt bad because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no tattoos".
