Stop right there
You fall into the trap like so many others
Lordi's act
a) was original. you definitely remembered it come voting time
b) had good music to it.
c) had less than good singer's quality.
The total act was good. And all in all much better than the rest of the contestants imo.
It's not just the quality of the singer's voice that gets rated. It's the entire act.
Btw you mention that you are a bit of a singer. The people who sign up for idols or the X factor say the sameTil shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

really? I think Mr. Lordi is actually a decent singer. not everyone agrees with what he does stylistically, but he hits notes well (even the falsetto stuff) and is usually on pitch, which is how I would define a good singer.
full disclosure:
Lordi is by far the most sissy music I listen to. most of the stuff I like is the most horrifying, blackest metal that Scandinavia has to offer, and so I LIKE the "cookie monster" vocals. (nerdy fun fact: when executing a deathmetal scream/growl correctly, you are not actually using your vocal cords at all (which is why a good metal singer can scream for hours and never lose their voice), it is mechanically more similar to burping than it is to singing, although the diaphragm mechanics are the same) As such, I tend to think Mr. Lordi's singing is pretty melodic, and sounds good in a hair metal sort of way. (compared to, say, Tom Araya, he's practically an opera singer...)

My problem with Lordi's vocals is that they are neither fish nor meat (translated saying).
I like powerful male vocals ala Manowar or Rammstein. Powerful yet clear
And I like death grunt vocals, as long as the music itself is melodic. Examples are early tristania and sirenia.
But Lordi is neither. The singer tries to grunt clear lyrics. I know nothing about music so I hope my explanation makes sense. It's not that his technique / tones are bad. It's just that his style of singing doesn't appeal to me, and I thought it didn't really fit song. Imo he should have chosen one or the other.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I agree that Lordi's song would have sounded better minus the falsetto stuff and plus some proper deathvocals a la Dimmu Borgir or Arch Enemy. maybe someone has done a cover? I'll have to look for one when I get out from behind this firewall and can get to youtube.

Thanked: 131On a more lighthearted note, this was another entry from the same year that Lordi won.
Needless to say they were wrong....

Jockeys, have you ever heard about a band called Master's Hammer?
Some say, their albums Ritual and Jilemnicky Okultista are the best black metal works ever...
Song "Geniove" / album Ritual: (not quite office safe)
