Okay Ray but would you consider that a hit?

Here's one with a funny little personal history. I think I was in the fourth grade and the teacher had a special treat for us one day. This hippy chick with a headband and a guitar was in our classroom singing Puff The Magic Dragon, Kumbaya and a bunch of nicey nicey peace songs. So in 1967 or so I wasn't all that evolved and I played rough with my G.I. Joes. They would be tortured and executed or commit suicide. It was not good to be one of my G.I. Joes. So when the little flower child asked if anyone had a request, she was a little off balance when I asked for:

YouTube - SSgt Barry Sadler, Ballad of the green beret

It was number 1 for 3 weeks!

EDIT> Haha, the Beatles' Let It Be was kept at number 2.

David Bowie, who was a fan of Mott the Hoople, wrote All the Young Dudes for the band, this was after they turned down his offer of another song from his Ziggy Stardust Album.

You better believe it. That one was being specially reserved for you to remember it.

I think the seventies were the decade of really crappy pop music. I graduated high school in 1976 and I can just close my eyes and remember Casey Kasem doing American Top 40. Here's one:
    YouTube - Daddy Dewdrop - Chick-A-Boom

I have a little challenge for my fellow music nuts. This truly crappy song was essentially a man getting ready to die and made it to #1 on both UK and U.S. pop charts.

That took some hunting(my memory is selective about crappy songs) but I think its-
YouTube - Vicki Lawrence- The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia

And (while I much prefer the muppet version) here's another 1 hit wonder for you.

YouTube - PIERO UMILIANI -"Mah Na' Mah Na' " (the original, 1968)
The Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia is a good one! Vicki Lawrence had her 15 minutes (including that song) because she won a Carol Burnett look-alike contest. However, that is not the "truly crappy song" I am looking for. This is the answer to my question:
YouTube - Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun

Terry Jacks did this song but believe it or not, Nirvana did a cover version.

Mahna Mahna was a hit for Piero Umiliani but I just looked him up and he had quite a few hits. I just learned something. Thanks you sir!

You're welcome, though I disagree with you about The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia, that's a terrible song

Just out of curiosity, did you find out if any of Piero Umiliani's other hits were hits in America?

I think it's a crappy song too. When I say "that's a good one" I mnt it qualified Vicki Lawrence as a oe hit wonder.
