    Default 2009 cheese rolling comp

Gareth (Galopede) -- this one's for you. This year's Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling competition which happened only a few days ago. Look at those people fly! There are broken bones, idiots being stretchered off by the ambulance crew, and - best of all - a rugby team at the bottom to bring you to a halt by rugby tackling you as you reach your peak speed. Man, I love this country sometimes.

Great isn't it! Just down the road from me that is. I was at the Tetbury Woolsack races where nutters race down and back up a hill almost as steep as that whilst carry 60lb woolsacks on their backs!

This year's Cheeserolling came off quite lightly actually. This from the local rag:

The bone-crunching races saw 58 casualties and 11 people were taken to hospital in ambulances.

Thirty five were competitors, four were catchers at the bottom of the hill and 19 spectators.

Their injuries included two spinal and a dislocated shoulder.

One member of the crowd fell out of a tree while trying to gain a better vantage point caused the final two runs of the day to be delayed.

Makes you proud to be British!

OK, this is maybe not crazy, but weird I think.

What do you do if you live in the middle of the desert on a dry river bed? Hold a boating regatta of course!

Behold the majesty that is the Henley-on-Todd Regatta!

This is one aspect of GB that is fast disappearing which is great -- the freedom to act like an idiot and cause injury to oneself without fear of litigation. I suspect that in a more litigious society (such as with our cousins across the pond ) the organisers would have had their (bruised) butts sued off, as well as participants who caused injuries to others through falling. Actually, I'm surprised our bonkers attitude to 'Health & Safety' (aka Killjoy Law) hasn't outlawed this yet. There may not be many more years of this to come!

And glad to see our Aussie friends demonstrating similarly nutty sports. Boat racing in a dry riverbed... genius! Of course, Australians are great at making sports out of most things, take Sledging!

Elf'n'Safety did try to stop the cheese rolling a couple of years ago I seem to remember but FAILED! A victory for common sense, something notably missing in the competitors!

And as for our antipodean friends, there is always a good turn out of Aussies and New Zealanders, at the event, especially New Zealanders. Must be something in the water down there.

Today's CAS brings us a guy who does that jumping off walls and stairs sport thing... whatever it's called. I have a hard time believing this guy isn't using wires. (Music is a bit in your face loud.)
