I have to say this, and I expect to be flamed. I am an avid gun lover. Understand that the 1st bullet you fire is going to make YOU the hunted.
Drop that weight and stock up on 1st aid, an axe, and a damed good knife. Make a surgical/suture kit a part of your pack. Add a blanket, and a 2nd multi-tool, and a fire starter kit.
Add a good set of optics, a compass, a whistle, and the slickest 1st aid manual that you can carry comfortably.
If you ever find the need to carry 400 rounds of ammo around don't worry. You will be able to pick up a gun off of a guy already dead in the street. Ammo won't be hard to find either.

Thanked: 278If the purpose of a bug-out-bag is to keep you alive for 72 hours, then - being realistic - all you really need is protection from cold. You don't even need water to survive 72 hours. Of course it's good to have, as are medical supplies.
It's sad to think that in the event of a natural disaster the biggest threats might come from other people, so you need to stock up with ways to deal with them. I guess you see people's true nature at times like that.

History has shown that natural disasters have brought people together. Of course immediately after they suffer from a plague of carpet baggers and politicians!

I carry 50 rounds of .45 ACP in my bag, and an extra mag.
I go to school 4 times a week and it is about 50 miles from my house. Depending on the situation, if things got really bad, I'd ditch my truck and tread on foot in the woods. I have enough supplies in my bag to make it home.
I live in a rural area, so I have an advantage over you guys that live in the city.

it would be an easy way to eliminate friendly competition
for example
it could be added to flavored water that you traded off or just handed to the most dangerous person around
" I wanted to give you some water just to be nice"
see a couple posts up about firing the first round
the level 2.2 and 3 bags are to be carried in a vehicle while getting out of Dodge btw
not carried

There is a pretty neat forum that I just joined that discusses the subject of B.O.B.'s:
edcforums.com - Index
EDC - fwiw stands for Every Day Carry. Lots of good info, and if you think we here at SRP have AD's, think again.
Here in Arizona, not too many natural disasters to worry about, the weather is very stable (even though its starting to get frigging HOT), no real earthquakes to be wary of, all of our "volcanoes" are dead.
The "disaster grade" problems we face would be the influx of California refugees if or when Cali falls off into the ocean (or declares bankruptcy). There's also the problem to the south to consider.

Thanked: 234If I were to have a BOB, it would contain the absolute bare minium I could get away with. Fire starting kit, compass, something small to carry water, purification tablets, knife.
Only things that I could carry on my person, nothing I needed a car for - if the situation was that bad, every thing else would be availible a long the way - in that situation it's the choices you make after the event that dictate your survival. Making like a shepard away from population hubs would be my focus.
