I've never really had a BOB. My camping gear is always just a minute from being ready to go though. It helps that I work less then ten minutes from my home and could walk it if I had to, either that or I am driving a vehicle that has at least 500 miles of range and isn't going to be stopped by much.

Does anybody have any experience with portable water filters like katadyn? They are somewhat new as far as I can tell and kind of pricy, but in theory could be convenient if you can't make fire or don't have another way to purify water.

Water filters are good for eliminating contaminates down to a very small micron, but always remember to boil the water especially if a situation happens that causes you to use contaminated water. In that case not only would I double filter and boil I would also use water purification tabs.
Call me nuts, but the last thing I want is a stomach bug bringing me down.
I use an old charcoal type filter which is the PUR brand. My father in law uses a ceramic filter. Advantage to the ceramic filter is that it can be cleaned and does not need to be replaced. The other filters need to be replaced. Disadvantage, if you crack it it is useless.
I have drank water double filtered from a swamp out of my filter. Never had a problem.

Waters filters aren't all that new. I've used a ceramic "sweetwater" filter for backpacking for the last 18 years. Never suffered from any bugs I could sttribute to the water. Of course your choice of a water source helps there too.

Boiling water? yuk.
a lot of fuel and time.
Filters are tried and true. I have been thinking of getting a SteriPen with solar charger
