I didn't take the time to read all the replies, but I agree, What's the big deal, it's a joke.
That's what's great about the U.S. You can poke fun at people normally without fear of reprisal. I'm sure Letterman himself didn't write the joke, He has writer's that do it for him.

There is an old saying about rights,,,,

In the US of A you have many rights, more than most places, think of the right to swing your arm, you can swing your arm as much as you want, anywhere you want... Right up until the time it connects with somebody else's nose, at that point your rights ended.... (for the under-educated this is a metaphor)
I would say for sure, A-Rod and the younger Palin have bloody noses......

    Some random thoughts:

Comedians and artists probe the edge of the social norm. We cheer them on as they mock prevailing standards. Then one day they cross the line and society turns on them. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Letterman knows this. He is doing some fancy footwork now to step back away from the edge. Palin was quick to recognize his error as a political opportunity. It will be interesting to see how she handles this going forward since she is a political contender. She could become the heir-apparent champion for conservative values.

The tendancy of both artist and politician to "lightening-rod" public opinion is the source from which they draw their power and why they are admired or scorned.

I've always found it amusing that we teach children "sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you"...but then as adults run around wanting to sue someone every time they call us the grown up equivalent of a "doody head" or make fun.

I agree with the late George Carlin, also with Penn & Teller, and an assortment of linguists...they're just words. Words only have what power we choose to give them.

Also, one TAKES offense at something. It's quite impossible to offend someone against their will. Just depends on how readily a person gets ruffled.

Just my (very) humble opinions in general.

Anyone campaigning to have Letterman fired is obviously pretty dim-witted. Celebrities, politicians and their families are joked about in late show monologues every night and you don't hear a peep from them.

As I understand it, Letterman was misinformed and accidentally implied that Palin's 14 year-old was "knocked up" by A-Rod at a baseball game. The other daughter, the eighteen year-old, unwed teenage mother, Bristol - who I believe was not even at the game -- was who he was referring to! But you know, if anything, I think the fourteen year-old can glean a bit of wisdom from Letterman's apology to her and her mother and learn a lesson that was clearly not taught in their household: If things get a little too heated, it's best to pull out before there's no going back.

Oh, and of course this is Palin's team trying to reap the publicity! Even the snide statement she released to announce that Letterman's apology had been accepted was clearly not written by her. It reads that comedians of his ilk should "evolve." Evolve? As in -- the theory of evolution? Hold the phone! Ha ha!

This whole ridiculous issue reminds me of this awesome scene, in which Edward Norton OWNS!
