    Default David Letterman

He told a tasteless, poorly thought out joke for "cheap laughs". He was led to believe the the older daughter, not Willow, was with the Governor that night. He himself said that he checked to make sure that Bristol was 18 before he made the joke.

In Letterman's 30 year history has he ever made a poor joke that is along this line? I would think not.

What about people like Imus and Limbaugh who make similar statements. Imus making a racist comment, being fired and rehired.

I just do not understand what the hubbub is all about. I get that the joke was bad, I get that it was poorly delivered, I get that his staff and Letterman fell down on the intelligence gathering. I understand all that. What I do not get is why is this such a big deal? It is like Letterman said, I have not heard from A-Rod or Spitzer.

George Carlin said it best in one of his standup routines. "...There are two knobs on the radio, one changes the channel and one turns it off." If Letterman offends you, turn him off and get at him with ratings.

IMHO this is a political stunt by Palin to secure some odd fantasy that she has of running in 2012 with Jindal.

I do not want this thread to be a political finger pointer. I just want to understand what the big deal is.

I guess it is because people are holding "Fire Letterman" rallies.

I would call that a big deal.

You're absolutely right! She wanted a "joke" told about her 14 year old daughter getting knocked up by A-Rod told on national TV. She wanted it, and so did her daughter! Palin's statements are not in defense of her daughter, or her family, it is purely politically motivated, because that is what she is, a political animal. She doesn't care about her family.

    sarcasm ends here.

It doesn't matter whether or not Letterman was making the "joke" about 14 year old Willow or 18 year old Bristol, it was classless, tasteless, and demining to an individual that should not be put into the public light, as well as demeaning to women in general that such a "joke" about an innocent party could be tolerated on national TV.

You obviously do not have daughters, or you would be just as outraged as I am. He should be fired.

I do not have daughters. I have a wife. I find the joke just as poor as you do. However, it was a joke. A course, tasteless, rude, offensive, and any other adjective you want, joke.

Again if you find some thing not to your liking, turn it off, change the channel. We have the freedom of speech in this country and as long as Letterman did not infringe on Willows rights, which he did not, then just stop watching him.

I can say whatever I want about anyone in this country and as long as those are not threats or meant to lead to incitement then I have no problem with it.

Imus, just as repugnant with his racism and then being rehired. Limbaugh has had his moments. The political figure in the Carolinas that compared Michelle Obama to a monkey. The list goes on.

Course jokes will always appeal to a class of people if they did not then Andrew Dice Clay would have had a short career.

    With respect.

a person is free from criminal prosecution under their "freedom of speech" rights, but not from civil liability. If he were to say such things about my daughter(s) I would be suing his arse so fast his head would spin, and I would hire the best publicity firm to cover the run up to the trial, and the trial itself, dig up every hooker he has slept with to testify, and thrash his reputation.

You are free to speak what ever you want about anyone, but be ready for the slander/libel suit which will inevitably follow.

Ok guys tone it down a notch and leave your emotions at the door.
There is no need to have a go at each other because you don't agree.
