At the risk of taking this thread OT: I don't think Big Macs are that bad. Sure, on the scale of hamburgers, they only make it to 'not bad', but the good thing about Big Macs (or McDs and their ilk in general) is that if you want to taste something familiar, you can get it anywhere in the world, and you know it is most likely not going to make you sick.

The thing is: if you just pull up to some random schack where they sell sandwiches or burgers, you have no idea about the quality. In your own town, there are probably places you really want to avoid, and you know which ones.
In a different country / city you have no clue. But you do know that McD and similar chains have a reputation to uphold and are generally audited and controlled tightly. I knew someone who managed a 'quick', and from what I understood, there are strict rules regarding preparation, how long to keep a burger waiting etc.
So even though the food is not that great, you know that you can safely eat it without getting sick, whereas a random burger joint would be a bigger risk. They can be better, or they can be much worse.

I know there are rules. However I have a friend who manages a Mcd's. He comments on other McD's when he's out and about and it can be shocking how little actual regard there is for the rules. Also...my brother an a friend of his got Food poisoning from a McD's at one point.

I have no love for McDs, I would take my chances at the random shack at the side of the road. If it looks busy, its probably good.
