    Default North Korea Fascinates Me

You know, we really have so little information about the place, that every little bit seems like news from a foreign planet. Or from 1986. Living in Japan, of course there is a lot of concern about the madman in charge over there, but I am more interested in the little media bites we get--the news flashes and such. The aesthetic and the style are just so strange, yet somehow so familiar, I love it. And just for the record, totally unlike South Korean stuff.

The commercial here: BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | North Korea launches beer advert
    is just amazing.

And check out the news clips:
YouTube - KCTV 보도(news) Foreign Ministry

This one is interesting--it's actually a clip from SOUTH Korean news, examining the changing face of NORTH Korean news. Note the huge difference in style between the South Korean announcing at the start, and the true Socialist Fervor of the North.
YouTube - TV Broadcasting and Its Development in DPRK

    Bizarre...but fascinating!

From that first news reader's body language, i'm wondering if there's a chap standing out of shot with a gun pointed at him! Also, the people's beer could do with a little more beer & a little less head. The poor buggers.

In a way, that is true. If he is seen as not being 100% 'pro kim', then there is a very real risk of disappearing.

I was stationed at a place called Camp Liberty Bell in Korea in the 70's. A very strange place, I remember the music the north used to pump over the loudspeakers at night into the DMZ, very, very strange. Propaganda leaflets and the whole nine yards.

As far as the new "news" format goes, its about time they upgraded to something a little "kinder, gentler." as there is no need for the unfriendly austerity. Its better if the guy with the AK to your head is not so ever present and it makes it easier for you to pretend that you are not being dominated. Think happy thoughts.

Heard stories from some of the Senior NCO's when I was in about Liberty Bell, they mentioned that their "mirrors" were odd looking guys that were generally scared to death and flinched at any movement at all. I really wonder what the true military capability of the North is.

For what it's worth, the movie "Team America" I believe give a great representation of ol' Kim

    N. Korea is only as tough as China lets it be. My bet is that China prefers the capitalists mammon to Kims BS. The guy sells countless Koreans into slavery to the Russians to pay his debts, these poor people are then shipped to Siberia to log the forests. I friend of mine who is familiar with the area has told me that as many N Koreans as possible are making their way to China, and the Chinese along N Koreas border are afraid to bury their dead because the starving Koreans will dig up the body for food.

    It doesn't really matter.

NK has enough artillery lined up to pretty much obliterate seoul if they are provoke. Otoh, Kim knows that all sabre rattling aside, if he actually attacks a neghboring country, NK will be nothing but a hole in the ground afterwards.

So it is a stalemate until NK implodes

Actually if we nuked parts of NK we would be doing Kim a favor. Its just less mouths to feed and he doesn't give a rats posterior about his people anyway.

I wonder how much of it is fear, and how much of it is thorough brainwashing. In other words, I wonder how much of it the poor guy buys...

There have to some people for whom it is all actually persuasive--they actually believe that their Dear Leader is more than human, and that they live in paradise...they have to believe it, or they'd throw themselves out a window, wouldn't they?

And as for the beer...yeah, pretty sad. Maybe they'll get better at pouring with some experience?

I was going to start a similar thread after watching some of their (weird) news
the songs, the marching, the sheer weirdness

but I know nothing about NK other than the old lesson from TKD about never taking your eyes off you opponent

    seems sound advice to me

maybe instead of leaflets we should be dropping Big Macs
the winning of hearts and tummies and all that
