I know this is a slight off topic (sorry Bruno) but have any of you good fellows played the board game of THUD??
It is interesting to play, good strategies needed. I've played a few times, just wondered if anyone else had??

Today I picked up Discworld books 1-15 as well as Nation for good measure. Depending on how it goes, I'll probably wipe out the first book tonight before I go to bed. If I really like it, I might just go through more

Huzzah! Come in, the water's fine! But do take your time. I've found that with each re-read, I find some additional reference and have a good cackle .
But as a response to the thread: Great to know there are other fans here too, though I've seen some DW signatures here. I'm a big fan and collect the hardbacks.
As for minor characters, I enjoy Leonard da Quirm and Hex (especially in hogfather).
Other great but not so minor characters for me are the Librarian and Nobby.

Anybody who comes across this thread and hasn't read discworld; trust me, you have no idea what you're missing.

Just to give you a little warning: The next on the list (I think) is Mort. It is not a bad book, but it is more serious and less funny than the others.
Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
To spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the Last Day

There's no reason why you couldn't enjoy all the books in succession, even at random, since they're enjoyment even by themselves and written as standalone (with few exceptions). But if you do have them in OCD-friendly series (like I do), you will get more by reading it in somekind of order. I prefer storyline based progression, reading up one story until I run out of books.
Yeah, they're written in parallel storylines with different characters and surroundings. They might or might not merge. Cameos might or might not happen. As you might have noticed, you have switched from the Rincewind storyline to the first book in Witches storyline (Don't cry - The Luggage will return in the later books ).
The two first books were about Rincewind and Twoflower, and the next Rincewind book would be Sourcery (Sorry to say, my least favourite TP book). Rince continues through Eric, Interesting times, Last continent, Last hero.
Current you're reading the Witches, which continues from Equal rites to Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade, Carpe Jugulum, Wee Free Men (Cameo), Hat full of sky, Wintersmith(? Haven't read).
I would suggest that you read either Sourcery or Wyrd Sisters next. As Bruno said, the next bibliographically would be Mort. The question is, do you like to read more of Rincewind, The Witches or Death. Your call.
There's somekind of list at Discworld - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, which I used to get my memory refresher for the lists above and below. Feel free to browse the table, but stay away from the text as it might contain spoilers.
Another story lines are
-Death (Mort, Reaper Man, Soul Music, Hogfather (a must at Christmas-time), Thief of Time) In addition, Death cameos in almost every book.
-City watch (Guards!Guards, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, Fifth Elephant, Fifth elephant, The truth, Last hero (~cameo), night watch, monstrous Regiment, Thud!). Again, lots of cameos not listed here
-Nac Mac Feegle (The wee free men) / Tiffany - Carpe Jugulum (without Tiffany), Wee Free Men, Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith, plus "I Shall Wear Midnight" in 2010." (arewethereyetarewethereyet)
-Wizards: Equal Rites, Sourcery, Moving Pictures, Reaper Man, Lords and Ladies, Soul Music, Interesting Times, Hogfather, Last Continent, Last Hero, Unseen academicals (2009. October I think?)
-Also other storylines + cameos etc going all over the place. It gets better at second reading reading or so
Hope this helps

Quick update: I didn't end up reading the first Discworld book when I had planned and only picked it up today. I'm 31% into it and have been rolling with laughter almost the whole way! I can't believe I've never heard of these before.

Thanked: 317ursus, you told me exaclty what I wanted to know. Reading them in the order written is what I'll be doing. I'm now a good chunk of the way into Mort, and lovng it. Knowing that the story will go bac and forth between the different lines as I work my way through the books is a big plus to me.

I'm right in the middle of Wyrd sisters right now...I'd forgotten how really GOOD Pratchett is at writing. Not just amusing, but GOOD. An exceptional ear for dialog, a great sense of pacing and scene, and a really deep use of language.
What fun!

I finished the first book last night and am now 52% into the second one. I'm convinced now that I need to buy these books. It seems like every other line in the story is something I could quote. Rincewind is terribly funny, but my favorite character has to be Death. For some reason, I always picture Death from Family Guy...it just seems to fit.
