    Default H1N1

I simply have to pay more attention to information I hear on the car radio while traveling. Late last month I distinctly recall hearing a U.S. healthcare related person say that by the end of September, 10 million cases of H1N1 were anticipated. That number caught my attention. However, it didn't register with me as to whether than number was for the U.S. or worldwide. I would assume worldwide?

I've been viewing this link periodically at the U.S. Center for Disease Control website. This link reports as close to a "real time" count of cases in the U.S. As of this writing on 9/24/2009 4,569 total reported cases with 364 flu like related deaths. HERE'S THE CDC LINK

Has anyone heard what the worldwide numbers are supposed to be to date?

I can't comment on the numbers, but Maddox has a great post regarding swine flu:

I hope I get swine flu.

Don't you just hate it when germ warfare leaks out into the population?

Yeah, I know, my wife thinks I am nuts too. I will not hijack the thread, but I am just saying.

If it's germ warfare, it's pretty crappy...

My mom's a health department nurse, giving out shots and such, and they're constantly being harassed about the shots because people see on the news where it's the next freaking plague...IT'S JUST UNSEASONAL FLU!!!!!

Swine flu is just beginning here in the U.S. By the time the season is over I think there will be way more than 10 million cases in the U.S alone.

Also just think of it this way. It is fortutitous that the strain that will sweep the world is a mild strain. It could have just as well been bird flu or the same stuff that killed millions in the early 20th century.

Sheesh H1N1 is so over hyped. there was an article I saw where Dr Gupta caught it recently in afghanistan and confirmed what we all knew before... it's pretty much the regular flu. all doctors have said don't go to the hospital unless you would with similar flu symptoms.

    It's the freakin flu!

    Good to see you, Jerad.

I will say at the age of 29 I got some strain of influenza. The real flu. Prior to that I thought of "the flu" as some stomach related thing were you felt nauseous and threw up a lot. I had true influenza and it had nothing to do with stomach. Extremely high fever, shocking weakness (toward the tail end of it I literally could barely lift a spoon of broth from the bowl to my mouth; the spoon may as well have weighed a few hundred pounds). Reality even became surreal and fuzzy. I recall thinking, again a day or so before my fever broke surprisingly abruptly, that I could see how infants or the elderly could die from it. If it would have lasted one more day I was prepared to attempt to dial 911 for an ambulance. I'm not exaggerating. It was literally the sickest I've ever been to date. And I have a healthy immune system.

I did have the same experience--caught the REAL flu for the first time, and yeah...it was pretty bad. Couldn't walk, in and out of consciousness for about a day...

Luckily, my doctor had Tamiflu and I had the good luck to get to the doctor's office before it closed for the night. He had me right as rain in 4 days.

I've had the flu more than once and never had a flu shot in my 60 years. I figure I'll take my chances... knocking on wood. They are saying that older folks ... I don't know if that includes me ... are less susceptible to serious consequences from it because we've been exposed to so much of it over the years. Teens are in more danger. I know I've had it to where I felt like I was going to die and was afraid that I wouldn't.
