What kind of knife is this?
I know we have a lot of cutlery fans around here, so I thought maybe one of youns would know...
I ran across this knife posted on a Japanese auction site, and it has me really intrigued. The seller says that it's an old family item, and they have no idea what it's supposed to be used for, but that it's frighteningly sharp (the listing is "Knife/Razor/Scalpel...) It's 19.9cm long, the blade is 14.5cmx3.4cm
Any ideas? It looks...interesting.

No idea what it is, but I think you should buy it and pin a set of scales on it.

It's probably a style of cleaver, and because its Asian, was probably intended for use on large fish. Another clue is the handle with its Cat's Tongue grips, which probably kept it from flying out of slippery hands mid-swing and landing on Akira's head across the room. Plus, the unwieldy wooden box suggests it was cared for and likely not a portable thing.
It's not a machete, because the weight of that wedge blade would make it ill-suited for underbrush.

I think you're right about fish... I was just thinking about that grip--it looks like some of the fish knives my dad used to have.
But it's not THAT big, like the blade is only 14.4cm long, so it wouldn't be big enough for beef and the like. That's about the length of a ball point pen...so it's not massive, not a Tuna knife or anything.
Hmmmm...it's at 1000 JPY (about 11 bucks) and 0 bids. I'm tempted.。。
