Adios until next year!
Well ladies and gents, beginning early next week, I'll be on my way to Army basic combat training in Ft. Jackson, SC. It's 9 weeks, so I don't plan on being back until the beginning of 2010. Just thought I'd let everyone know in case anyone wondered if I'd died with all this snow (8+ inches today!).

Thanked: 20I for one wish to say Thank You for your service to our country.
Eight inches of snow this early....brutal. (We don't get snow more than about once every three to five years here in Atlanta.)

I also want to say Thank You and Good Luck. South Carolina isn't too bad. I'm from Norther Indiana myself (30 minutes from Lake Michigan) so I feel you on the snow. The past few winters have been great.

Thank-you for your service and you'll be missed. Stupid curiosity question for you, since you will be gone for nine weeks, does that mean you'll have to use a disposable razor or do you get to take your straights with you? I know you won't have the time each morning for a leisurely shave, but I am curious to know if the base has any restrictions on soldiers having or bringing straight razors with them.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! It's a nice change from some of the attitudes I get. People "support" the troops until the troops are people they know.
For soldiers in basic, the list of things we get to possess is rather short. If something isn't on the list, it's termed contraband and it likely gets thrown away. I'll have to suffer through a BIC and goo in a can for a couple months After training, there are no restrictions on my shaving habits. These are, after all, the same people that issue 7" long combat knives. I intend to have mine sharp enough to shave with
