Thanked: 2ICEDOG, explain yourself.
Veterans day is to honor those who have served this country. The comment that you made i find very insulting. Load of Crap????????? In what shape or form is Veteran's day a load of crap? Men and women have died serving this country and the one day that everybody remembers them you call it a load of crap.Last edited by mattmatney; 11-11-2009 at 02:41 PM.

Countries that fail to respect their veterans (or even punish them for fighting against the "correct enemy" with the "incorrect allies") lose it morally.
Czechoslovakia after 1945 is a bitter example. Executing and imprisoning of war heroes and elite fighter pilots just because they were fighting along Brits and Americans and not the Soviets had long impacting effects on the morale of the Army and the society in the whole. I still feel ashamed of those acts despite being born long long time after the war.
I am very proud of my Great grandfather who fought for independence of the future Czechoslovakia in the Czechoslovak legions during and after WWI.

I think anyone who is prepared to lay down their life for their country deserves remembering. It would do all those servicemen and women, past and present, a tremendous disservice to forget their sacrifice.
Our whole office honoured the two minutes silence and 11am this morning and I feel that was absolutely the right thing to be doing. There are also a lot of signs up in shops today notifying customers that the store will be doing the same. Whats two minutes when these people gave their lives?

Heh, getting a little fishing in?
I'm a veteran and my first response, given Icedog's long standing, good presence on this forum, was to chuckle.
In all seriousness, Veteran's Day, with all it's retail emphasis and the 12 hours of lip service, sometimes gets on my nerves - some years more than others.

Thanked: 586You kids sure do shoot from the hip without first assessing your target. I see a bunch of people all ruffled like I am discounting the military service and sacrifices of your loved ones. And Lynn, how would you even fix your mouth to make such a nonsensical statement. I in no way said anything to "dis-respect those who have served". Nothing could be farther from the truth. Well first of all, I am a veteran of the US Navy and, since my honorable discharge in 1981, have never gotten the day off work. I see how the schools are closed and the mail doesn't get delivered but I see nothing that honors us veterans.
Perhaps I am missing it. I'll ask my fellow vets, what has come for you personally to honor you as a veteran on Veteran's Day. Do we get to see a movie free or a free bus pass. How about a sandwich and a bag of chips? Anything?
Now back off you people. I said nothing against veterans. I love veterans! Some of my best friends are veterans. I am a veteran! I spent four years of my life defending your country. I was prepared to die to protect you and your familiies and your way of life. I did not even imply any disrespect to myself and my fellow veterans. I said I don't like the day.I gave much of myself for you folks and what do you do for me? I don't feel very honored after reading your snotty comments and thinly veiled threats.
