The problem is that there are no "airport officials" doing the passport/boarding card checks at the gate, it's the same people who serve you your $5 beer in flight. An issue is that there are no actual authorities involved here, but only people trained for other jobs. Not that the authorities, in whatever form, are so universally psychologically sound and stable at all times, but there's a lower likelihood of some fancy guy convincing a busy flight attendant that this-and-that guy should be on. Yes, alarm bells should ring, but if the flight is already close to departure time, the crew are aiming to make that slot, because it's important. Having "outsiders" (non-airline related security people, and not just private security firms) do part of the paperwork checks would arrange for a lower risk of lowering the accuracy of some of these procedures. If the schedule becomes tight, the people with an incentive to get the plane out in time may just waive some things to speed up.

edit: This security screw-up shows that technical measures only do so much. I think we can learn a lot from Israeli airport security: trained pros interviewing in the check-in lines.

And the official story of the crotch bomber changes yet again.
I found this early this morning on a few "news" sites, which seem to be dropping this story like a hot potato. I found it tonight at mLive, have a read. I don't think it likely that this will be mainstream media news. So, for our amusment, here's the link, have read: Flight 253 passenger Kurt Haskell: 'I was visited by the FBI' | Detroit News - - MLive.com

i think this all comes down to people on the lowest levels not doing thier job. you can make all the guidelines you want but untill someone gets the book out and goes step by step by step people will screw it up or neglect to do it....i would fire everyone working that day in the section of the air port going to that flight just to set an example that hey do your job or your fired.
we dont need more rules. people need to quit worrying about being called a racial profiler insensitive or whatever word you choose to describe......if TSA cant do thier job im sure black water wouldnt have any problems getting it right since they dont have a problem with "shoot first and ask questions later" ideals

Oh yes, as I expected, it seems that Reuters has announced that the crotch bomber acted alone in getting himself on flight 253. This is in conflict with first hand eye witness Kurt Haskell, a lawyer from Michigan that seen the so called sharp dressed man escorting the crotch bomb to the ticket desk.
So my question is... Where is the video tape of the gate? After all those cameras have been bought and paid for with taxes and increased travel costs since 9-11. Where is the video tape showing the "Crotch Bomber" at the desk?!!
There's a lot of money here to be made by the military industrial complex. The giant defense contractor L-3 Communications is first line, having already landed a $165 million contract for body scanners from the Transportation Security Administration late last week. I'll bet that this contract has been in the works for at least 6 months, maybe longer. Another thing I read is that these scanners use terahertz radiation to see through non conducting materials like clothes , paper, wood and brick and so cameras sensitive to them can peer inside envelopes, into living rooms and "frisk" people at distance. The resonant effect may allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication.... I don't think I want any part of this scanner thing near me.

The TSA has experimented with bi-component explosives in a test, and even in a lab environment it is quite hard to actually mix / prepare it without it going off like a firecracker before it is mixed.

Injecting a powderpack with a syringe is going to hurt the one doing it, but it's not going to do anything else except cause mass hysteria among the security drones.

The US should learn from the Israelis. They are the ones dealing frequently with real terrorists instead of jokers with bottle rockets. And they seem to manage.

And not only do they have REAL security instead of the US security circus, but it is efficient as well, with passengers being able to board withing 30 minutes. And in case of a possible bomb detection in luggage, they don't have to evacuate the entire airport. all security rooms are completely blastproof against large quantities of high explosives.

You want real security? I had a friend who many years ago worked as a geologist for a S. African Diamond Mining outfit and when he left the country to return home he was first to report to the company office where he was strip searched and then x-rayed three times and all his luggage was totally inspected and then escorted to the airport under guard until he boarded the flight.

I've never heard of anyone taking any El Al International Flight who got on the plane in 30 minutes. Usually you can expect to spend some real quality time with their security people being interviewed and searched.

As far as the guy with the underwear issue I don't think TSA would have detected it. I don't think TSA, even with a patdown does a real full body patdown like law enforcement does. The traveling public wouldn't stand for it.
