No military, law enforcement or gun experience. But I love knives, tools, and fixing things, and have always had a soft spot for Rambo. That last bit didn't sound quite right, did it?
I love the smell of shaving cream in the morning!

Thanked: 143No military.
No law enforcement. (other than on the receiving end!)
But I have some familiarity with guns. Did some hunting in my youth and every two or three years I go to a range and rent a few handguns for target practice. I can hit the target.

Thanked: 39I think your findings may be perceptions or anecdotal evidence rather than empirical. Though I served in the military and have a fair amount of knowledge of various firearms, I don't think a correlation with that and straight shavers has validity.
However, I am fascinated by the premise and think a poll would be certainly in order. I would love to see the results, it might surprise us!

Thanked: 235I was having lunch on Sunday with one of my wife's friends who works for Proctor and Gamble, the company that owns Gillette. He was joking that I was his direct competitor but wasn't worried because he thought straight razor use was a neich market. That got me thinking, most people here share a similar background. Law enforcement, military, firearms, razors. And then I was thinking that if straight razor users represented a broader range of the community than law enforcement, military and firearms then maybe we could become a serious competitor to Proctor and Gamble.

No on all three items. I did see "Saving Private Ryan" once, though.

No military, no law enforcement, had a .22 high powered air rifle when I was young if that counts as a gun.
I think the common thread amongst straight razor users is we are all just a little bit offbeat from the "normal?" general public.
As for myself, I smoke a pipe, ride and race motorcycles, use a fountain pen, have mechanical time pieces, use a wood stove, brew my own drinks, wear kilts, etc.
Now that I look at what I have written I can see a common denominator, all of these things actually require maintainance and that you have to input before you get any output! Very interesting.

Thanked: 44No military, no LE, never fired a gun.
I love knives and bladed tools, so that led to straight shaving.

Thanked: 31to the gentleman who mentioned the weapons saftey course
all you really need to know are theese 3 things
1. ALWAYS TREAT THE WEAPON AS IF IT WERE LOADED
2. dont point the weapon at anything you do not plan to kill maim or destroy
3. know where your target is and what is beyond the taget
if you can do that you dont need a saftey class just pay attention to what your doing
and remember its always the un-loaded guns that kill people
