Not a military or LEO, and do not plan to be.
I have no knowledge of firearms, but I want to start hunting next year. But if you refer to handguns, I only know the basic safety rules and functions, but I never fired one.
But I'm Canadian
If you talk to me about knives, that's another story. It's easier to get a knife than a pen in my bedroom.

Gun owner and user.... none of the rest apply to me

That resonates with me, and several of the particulars you cite, I could as well; though I don't ride motorcycles or use a wood stove, and while I'm interested in brewing I haven't found time to learn it. And a grateful world testifies that I've never worn a kilt. I do like old radios--to add to the offbeat theme--and if I had to choose, would rather make my own music than listen to recordings. Oh, and manual typewriters. Can't forget those.
So, as you also alluded to, I'd say there is maybe a common theme of appreciating levels of craftsmanship and care that the modern world in general has discarded. "Martinis at 8" at The Fedora Lounge once spoke of "self-reliance and self-sovereignty," a concise expression of what I'd bet is an important part of the ethos of a lot of us here.
Exactly what my dad used to tell me about firearms, many, many years ago.
And to answer the original question--no military or LE experience; I did grow up on a farm and learned to shoot a rifle and shotgun, was a decent shot actually, and owned a Winchester .22 when young. Not for a long time though.

I have never been in the military and never in any kind of police.
But I own a shotgun and have shot with a few handguns plus various rifles and shotguns.

Reminds me of a Darwin Award case where someone had been learning gun safety. His dad (I think) disagreed and said that a weapon with safety on is perfectly safe. He took a rifle, chambered a round, put the safety on and hit the stock on the floor...
And shot himself through the head when the round went off.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I've often wondered about that myself...
Like Quick Orange, I've never served in the military. Nor am I in law enforcement. I do own several firearms for personal protection as well as hearth and home, however.Last edited by jhenry; 01-08-2010 at 12:13 PM.

I've been in the RAF cadets and later as a reserves officer, and I've been shooting since I was five.

No military, no law enforcement. I can use a gun, though I haven't owned (or fired one) since I was 18 (approximately 100 years ago). Somehow, I never seem to fit most profiles. Maybe I should change my user name to odd duck.

Thanked: 74I don't fit any of those 3 criteria, Military, Law Enforcement, or avid firearm individual. Since I did grow up on a farm, I know the basics of safe firearm handling, and can also be called upon at any time to do some basic tree trimming with a shotgun if needed.
Being a Canadian, I really don't get the fascination that some people have with guns. But, as long as no one is shooting at me, then to each their own.
