I would recommend a live trap and a big cat.

Live traps are fine if you can get the squirrels in them, but you must be sure to release them miles away from your home, otherwise they will come back.

I agree, you have a problem that must be addressed quickly.

I had some cousins that owned a two story duplex. I lived with them for some time years ago and I stayed in a bedroom loft in which the ceiling of the loft was the separation between that room and the attic. They had squirrel problems in a big way. At night the squirrels were active, fighting, scratching and making a commotion.

My cousins found the entry hole on the side of the house near the peak of the roof. They even screwed an old metal license plate over the hole and the squirrels just chewed the side of the house around the license plate and got back in. They had to call an exterminator and poison them if I recall correctly.

Although I have not tried it yet myself, I know quite a few people, my Dad included, that find fried squirrel to be delightful.

Use a squirrel trap like the one pictured above. When you catch one, submerge the trap in water. The work is complete when the clattering ceases and the last of the bubbles rise to the surface. Repeat these steps as needed.

I had the same problem once. The problem with trying to poison them is that if they die inside your house, they'll decompose and you'll have a bad odor problem. I looked into installing traps myself, but it was quite complicated. Ended up calling in a removal service. They did a great job and we haven't had a problem since. Key is to cover up any entrances they might use to get back in the house. Eaves are a particular problem.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

    They definatley are a problem!

Believe it or not, one of the common causes of house fires in the UK is squirrels chewing through electrical wires in the attic. The also cause power cuts by doing the same thing at generator sub stations.

So you need to get them out asap!

If you block up the entrance you need to make sure none are trapped inside, or else they wreck god knows what trying to get out...!

Again, if you use poison you'll need to get them out.

Shooting is fine if you're a good shot and dont mind spending the time on it, but you wont necessarily know if you got them all. And others may move into the now free accomodation..!

The best bet is to get a pest expert in and have them relocated well away from your house, and get the entrance and exits sealed up at the same time.

Good luck and I hope you can get the little critters out..!

I think that the live trap is the best i can do about this. I'm not so afraid the danger they might cause, it is just the noise they have at night when they play their squirrel games. This is very common problem here, almost every house i know have these dudes in their roofs every now and then, specially when the weather gets cold.
I have no heart to kill an animal, but i surely would like to see our dogs and cats doing their job.

a little peanut butter on a rat trap works for me. just make sure you wire your trap down so that when you make a catch you dont have to play hide and seek. good luck

You may be able to "borrow" a live trap for your use from your local Humane Society. We did when we had a ferral (undomesticated) cat in our garage during a cold snap several years ago.

BTW...You may want a professional handle this or wear some VERY thick gloves when you encounter those varmints...Squirrels, like any wild animal, may be infected with rabies or some other communicable disease.
