Thanked: 259i would venture to say, more people with higher education shave with Gillette. what are you doing here? in fact, i would bet most with college educations
would not dream of straight shaving.
the people without college educations fill the factories of the world. without them, the world would come to a halt...
the fact remains that college education does not make a person smart in all things. ever heard of "book smart, common sense stupid"? this applies more than most would like to admit..

Thanked: 1587Hey! It's not elitism if you actually *are* better than everyone else! Now, if you will all excuse me, there is a skinny latte with my name on it in the Profs lounge.

Thanked: 151Exactly! Why would you think about the truth? I mean there is no such thing as truth among people these days. Let's see, there are roughly 15K visitors and members on this site, so lets quadruple that number and that makes 60K users of straights. Now, there are a few more (only a few more) than 60K men in the US and I bet most of them(that do shave) shave with something other than a straight and I would even bet further that some of them are educated (not me of course).
Exactly, why think of the obvious truth when its soo much easier to be naive.

First, apparently I failed at some humor. I was not making any implication other than we can all make silly statements about various subjects. I often hear people defend Fox News with the statement "Then why is it the most-watched news channel?" -- which I think is an absolutely pointless way to validate anything they broadcast.
Second, what would become of those factories without management? Arguing the importance of labor versus management is an endless and pointless cycle because they are dependent upon each other.
I started the thread because I think it's absurd to suggest and broadcast that college makes people become more liberal, and it's doubly absurd to say that we need to fix something.

Thanked: 259ok, point taken.
but then i have to ask a question about the so called educated people of management that ran GM, Chrysler and a lot of financial business into the ground. while i know of lots of smaller companies that i deliver to are doing quite well with the managers NOT college educated. just plain ol' folks trying to earn a living and giving others a place to work. this is what i meant about making this world work. these are the so called uneducated people that deserve all the praise for sticking their necks out and trying to make a product and give others a job
back to my point, what does education have to do with making anything the most watched or used product?

The Fox segment basically said that college is problematic. At one point the anchor suggested that people might be better off not going to college, which Tucker practically agreed with.
Fox caters to a certain audience. I was connecting the dots between them being against college and also being the most-watched news station. Again, I was doing this as a flippant answer as to why they're the most-watched.
Mistakes and corruption are not specific to the people who ran GMC and Lehman Brothers. These things exist within people regardless of their educational background.

College turns kids liberal
Well, I think I can wade in on this. I worked my way through an MBA in the Army. I did it sparadically over the years whenever I would get wounded or hurt I would use the comp time to work on my degrees. Apparrently I was not good at ducking, but I did well studying . Anyway, . during my college time I was (and still am) a pretty conservative guy. I had the same low opinion about all the liberalism in the universities and voiced my concerns to my wife, who by the way, is much smarter than me (I try not to let her know it, but she does)..She graduated from a pretty liberal college (Holyoke) and went on to become a successful TV anchor woman...Anyway, she explained to me that universities actual sought out liberal professors. Not so much to influence the students, but to make them think....By invoking a totally far out concepts, students will actually be more stimulated to either agree passionately, or disagree passionately and work harder to state their opinion..This is a good thing. It is exactly how we want Americans to be....Passionate, expressive and communicative about their opinions...Now the flip side is some don't crack the code and continue to think in obscure fashions....Most get out of college and join the workforce and figure out a happy medium..Does that make sense?

Well, I got an engineering degree at a local university in the early 70's. Those were pretty heady times for student activism. None the less, I can't remember ever hearing anything political from my profs. Maybe it was different on the liberal arts campus.
Still, history shows that student movements are a political force that can be instrumental in cultural and social change. I think students just naturally tend to gravitate to the left because they are young and less beholden to the establishment. I'm sure they find sympathetic faculty members (some but not all). Within the faculty there are political factions just like here on the forum.
I remember feeling at college that my generation was special and would solve many of the world’s problems. It didn't work out as well as I hoped. Those Omega Theta Pi guys took over the investment banks.
