Does it surprise you that any particular race, nationality, religion or sexual preference would place emphasis on and "celebrate" their diversity? Does it surprise you that forms of power such as governments enable said diversity? "Divide and conquer" is a concept that is probably more effective than any other.

I'd read that recently in some Target stores, Muslim cashiers refused to touch/ring up any product being purchased that contained pork? I believe special concessions had to be made in those instances to accommodate the cashiers. As a Catholic, do you think I could do the same if any contraceptive were being purchased and I was a cashier at Target? I wonder.

A few points:

1. There are plenty of blacks who also disagree with this kind of thing, and who don't want any race-related special advantages, privileges, etc. I get that, and I also completely understand why people of any persuasion might have issues with a site like this.

2. In defense of the site, and of those who *would* consider it a good thing, I'd simply point out that blacks are still:

• less successful than whites overall, which could be seen as justification for anything that helps them - especially something promoting a culture of work and success
• a minority that is discriminated against in some quarters. I might not be racist, and you might not be racist, but there are certainly places where you can't toss a pebble over your shoulder without hitting one, and that still negatively affects how many blacks perceive themselves.

3. I'm 31, and my parents went to segregated schools, so it hasn't been all that long since legal discrimination ended. Another generation or so, and people might not feel as much of a need for this sort of thing. On the other hand...

4. ... I'd bet heavily there are fraternal organizations or other types of groups in which membership confers at least certain informal benefits (career-wise, etc.) that are de facto Jewish-only, Irish-American only, Chinese-American only, or whatever, they just don't have a website that appears to say so quite so openly. This kind of "helping and being helped by those like you" isn't anything new.

I really dont mind the idea of different independent/private organizations being racially, ethnically, gender based or religiously exclusive. What I do ind is the idea that whites cannot be exclusive, especially white men. I do not belong to any organization, but what is good for one is good for all. How many male applicants make it to Bryn Mawr, and yet places like VMI have to adopt standards that allow others in regardless of traditons.
