    Default Moooooooo

Just went in with 5 other familes and am buying a whole cow for slaughter. Grass fed, pasture raised, local, organic, picking up all 400-450lbs Thanksgiving weekend, can't wait! We have called ourselves the cow co-op.

Having grown up on a dairy farm before so many of them went industrial, I can assure you that the meat you get will be significantly better than what you have been getting at the store.

Ask the butcher for the leg bones so you can make scales!

That would be an awfully large razor...

I agree the fresh stuff is so much better. I haven't had experience with a fresh cow, mostly lamb and goats for me. Also some wild game like venison and rabbit and elk and moose.

This is totally random but be thankful that you didn't have to slaughter it yourself. It still creeps me out to think back when I first visited my grandfathers farm and he handed me a knife so I could get dinner:s

I have never made scales before, would it be fairly easy to do, or would someone buy them!?!?

I don't think it would bother me that much to slaughter the cow myself, just me personally, maybe it would though.

MMMMM.. fresh grass fed beef is the best. My uncle use to raise cattle and the family would go in on a cow. Also had some friends in Northern Michigan that had a farming co-op that always had fresh grass fed beef when I went up that way for work.

Even better make a pet out of him. Cows are cool.

My family is going in on a Bison as we speak (also grass fed). We are getting 1/4 of the animal. I can't wait. I knew that Bison was much better for you than Cow, but I never knew just how much better.

Yep, I like bison too...The reason is that the cows are given a bunch of stuff to make the meat taste the way the industry thinks beef should taste, so the result is Americans don't really know what "good" beef is anymore....So, when you eat "grass fed" it tastes bland..You have to recondition yourself....But with bison they have started off grass fed, so there is no expectation of better flavor..Just different..

And before anyone slams me for the "bland" comment...I speak from experience..I worked on a cow feedlot when I was teenager and it was horrific..They give those cows everything, but grass. And the conditions were stressful and disgusting for the cows, so what you get on your plate is a piece of "stessed" beef, which all hunters know that stressed game always tastes not as good as unstressed....I saw cows living on potatos, steriods too beef them up..forced to move on broken legs, infections and conditions not fit for a pig farm...So, my reason for accepting the "bland" taste over the regular store bought is very validated...
