I'm in the same boat. I've got a few that are halfway there, all large pieces that are in the works.

I've got the one of the "missle babies" from H.R.Giger's "baby gun". It's about 6" tall on the back of my calf. I suppose that's kind of biomechanical. For anyone that doesn't know, H/R.Giger is an amazing artist who single handedly designed the Alien movies aliens and alien den. He also did most of the set design work on "Dune". Really creepy stuff sometimes.

Wanna see some good work... check this out (look at Marcus's and John's portfolios)

You pretty much nailed the reason why I don't like tribal work. Its way to common really. They also tend to look alike. I am big into realism. Black and Grey style. I also love some of the Japanese style tattoos. My tattoos tend to have some sort of meaning to me that a tribal piece IMO can not do. I almost got a tribal piece on my back when I was researching my first one and I and so happy that I got the wizard tat. I have a phoenix and possibly a japanese style dragon I want to get done at some point. Might get a Navy anchor also after I have been in for a little while.

The Navy now has gotten alot more strickt on the rules for having tattoos. The 2 that I have now they took pictures of and had to get the approved. I had to fill out 2 different papers saying where I got them, when, how big they are, and that they have no emotional meaning to me. While I am in DEP, I have to sign a paper saying I haven't gotten any new tats. LOL and think of the old times where sailors where KNOWN for getting tattooed and drinking.

BTW this is the portfolio of the guys work that did my ink.
