Dylan,
I teach AP Chem and Honors Chem down here in Naples Florida and have 26 years of teaching service here in Collier County. The Naples area is a great place to live in and there are so many things to do if you like natural beauty. To the east the Big Cypress is pristine and to the west miles of sugar sanded beaches. I grew up in NY and never once regreted the move and raising my family here.
Even though there is not an open position for Physics right now, I do expect that there will be something in the not too distant future. PM me if you are interested and if you wish I will let you know when something is fixing to open up. Hard Science people are at a premium and if you are willing to teach at a middle school level or freshmen classes for a year or so you should be able to get something in for this next school year in Collier County and you will not have to wait too long to teach what you really like.
Just some food for thought. We really need more Hard Science people, especially with Physics and Chem certifications. You will have to jump a few hoops to get certified in Florida, but no big deal.
Mike
PS Being a young man of of science is good, Admin likes that, they save money. Us older guys are too cranky and cynical for themLast edited by Kingfish; 04-10-2011 at 03:07 AM. Reason: ps

This is what I absolutely Love About SRP!! People who will go not only go out of their way to help someone, but go the extra distance to make sure that the help is available!

Thanks for the info, Mike, and the offer too. I will definitely be in touch. I really regret not taking chemistry in college, because now it would be SO much work to get a chemistry certification. I do, however, think it's more than just a little silly that there are so many crosslistings between bio and chem courses in college but none between chem and physics. Anyway, I'm going to make a note to drop you a PM tomorrow when I have some more time on my hands.

Good luck on the job hunt! I still remember, to this day, my high school physics teacher. Why? Because he was enthusiastic about it. I remember all my teachers who were enthusiastic about their subjects, and those teachers were the ones who made the impacts. Hopefully you get a meaningful job in a position you enjoy!
That's not to slight working for AoS. A job working to sell shaving supplies? Are you kidding me!? The only thing I could think I'd rather sell more is guns!

Thanked: 1936Hey Dylan, I don't have the masters...but a BS in Biology & BA in Business...about 15 years in construction management, of which the last 9 years was at the regional management level...& I'm now a locomotive engineer. Who would have thought it? You might try out some of the railroads. Our company: RailAmerica - Home is always looking for managers as well as BNSF & Union Pacific. Best of luck to you!

Well, I called AOS to follow up. There was no central number listed on the application/employment pages of their site, so I called the store I applied to directly. Apparently all applications are directed to their HR department, and no contact information is provided. So it seems it's just a waiting game from here on in.

Dylan, I would think with your experience with wet-shaving and the list of references you could provide you should be a shoe in for the job good luck

I hope the best for you in your job search!
Just for a reference, I am graduating in about two weeks with a BS in Hospitality Business. My experience is above average for a student of my age and I applied to AOS stores in Las Vegas and Pennsylvania about two months ago and have heard nothing. I also tried to follow up with phone calls and emails directly to their HR department and have had no responses whatsoever.
There is always a possibility that they just do not like me as a candidate but I thought it was strange that they would completely ignore someone. It may suit you best to continue to call until you can reach someone actively involved in the interview/hiring process as it seems like they may not be too on top of their game.

Thanked: 1936I have done quite a bit of hiring and the one thing that I would always go for first is a recommendation from someone inside that was a good employee. Second was someone who made an effort to see me or at least speak to me over the telephone. After that, it's just whoever's resume seemed to fit the bill. I'm sure I let some great candidates slip by this way as we don't all have that perfect resume to "jump" out at the person hiring...which may of course not be the perfect resume for the next person reviewing it. Keep on trying for a FTF with the GM of the store & at the least get them on the telephone.
