It's official, I applied for a job at AOS
I'm coming to the close of two years as a per-diem substitute teacher and tutor, and things aren't really looking up. It's near impossible to get a teaching job without teaching experience, and even with it, schools all around here are laying off teachers. I figured it's about time I tried looking at another area, both work wise and geography wise. I'd move for a job, and if it's something I love I'd do something besides teaching.
I thought it should be fairly easy for me to find other jobs; I have a BS in physics and a MS in education, both from the University of Rochester. Well, that just isn't the case. It seems every job wants someone with experience, and given the state of the economy the pool of applicants with experience seems rather large. For example, right after I finished graduate school, I applied for a job at Hess as a cashier (they have the little store at the gas station); I did not get the job because I don't have experience as a cashier. Cause that's not something I could learn, right?
Anyway, I figured that at a shaving related shop, I might have a chance, plus it would be a job I'd love. I did some retail in high school (at a bike shop), and I know more than the average guy about wetshaving. Let's see what that counts for.
There isn't one up here, but I applied for a sales position at the Art of Shaving down where I grew up. There are several in the area, so I figure I should have a shot. Oh, and I mentioned I've been an active member on here for three years, so let's see where that gets me.

Good luck man. You could become the store Straight Razor guy!
Worse comes to worst, they're always looking for English teachers in Asia, all you need is a college degree.

AOS could use some folks like you on staff.

At least that will be one store location where customers won't have to be warned off that "They don't know how to sharpen a razor there." good luck.
we've been trying to get good help where i work at the earthy-crunchy groceria and it's just excruciating. where are all these people who are out of work?i could at least show you how to make 12.60 an hour scooping and decorating cupcakes.

See, if you had bought one of Cletus' testimonials you could have gotten any job you wanted. Why you would probably be a Physicist at the National Lab right now but instead if you be lucky you get to sniff shave products.

Well Dylan, you need to do what you have to do to take care of yourself. I'm glad that you are flexible as that is one major aspect in finding a job in this world. Focus on the good points: no more green Kia, employee purchase and you will be giving new wetshavers a fighting chance.

Oh, the Green Kia! I didn't mention it, but the other day it was parked out in the street (properly, for a change). It had clearly been in an accident, as there was damage to both doors on the driver's side. Not enough that it looked like anyone got hurt, but it'll need new doors. Definitely enough to make me smile at Karma.

Good luck Dylan, I hope you get that job or a better one.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Good luck with the application. B&N has some great books about preparing for interviews and that jazz if it's been a while. I got laid off back in January 2009 and couldn't get an interview for a full time position till that Sept. That book helped a bit. I'd applied to 2-6 jobs a week but only got two interviews. One was for a part time position where I'm full time now. Getting your foot in the door really helps. We post positions internally for 10 days before they global public so we routinely hire part time and entry level folks and a lot of them end up full time b/c of the advantage given to folks already working for us.
