For a real eye opener read "John Adams" by David McCullough, or "Founding Brothers" by Joseph Ellis. The disputes and partisanship were there from the beginning. An example being the vice president of the USA killing the secretary of the treasury in a duel. It went downhill from there if your read the history rather than the myth.

You could say you have a constitutional republic that is a representative democracy. Other terms for this form of government include liberal democracy and constitutional democracy. In your presidential elections, it is usually "majority rules" due to their being only two main candidates, though in many local and regional elections, you would be more accurate to say that "plurality rules". That's what we get up here in Canada, where in our recent provincial elections we ended up with a "minority government". One of the three main parties got the most seats, but not more than the other two parties combined, so they aren't the majority, but they have the most seats and, thus, form the government.

Thanked: 1262If you went through newspaper archives, every generation probably think the next generation is ruining this country. I imagine radio was the devil. Then television. Then video games. Then the internet.

That's a technicality.
For example the presidency: these days you don't really elect the electoral college. You elect whom they will vote for. I would be suprised if voters actually knew 'who' their electoral voters were. The EC is a technicality that only matters in the sense that voters in some states outweigh other voters in significance.
Even then, the popular vote is almost always equal to the electoral vote, and many states have laws against the electoral college deviating from the popular vote. By and large, it is a moot point.
For all practical purposes, the majority in the US does rule. The only reason democrats and republicans alternate the presidency is that the voters usually get sick of whoever is in charge, and pick the other party in the hopes that things will be better.
EDIT:
The above is for the presidency. But it works at all levels. most of the Americans will either vote for someone because he belongs to the right party; not for their wisdom.Last edited by Bruno; 10-21-2011 at 02:28 PM.

Actually it was central heating and air conditioning. Since the advent of these the govt, nor its bureaucracy has had to shut down and go home during the recesses. The horrid winters and summers, as well as the malaria/cholera outbreaks of the DC area demanded these breaks. No more breaks means that they have all year to screw things up. The pols used to be forced to go home where they would get an earful from their constituents. A check and balance in our government has been eliminated. It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

I would just like to point out what I perceive to be a glaring oversight by all of you with regard to this topic. I feel it is necessary to clear some things up. Shame on you for letting the inaccuracies persist this long.
It's called "two girls, one cup." There is not, nor has there ever been, a bowl. To imply--much less contend--that a bowl is used is dishonest and shameful.

The 24 hour news cycle is another thing. This has made us , the public, a beast that needs to be fed constantly. The media seizes upon anything it can exploit to stoke the fires. When the news was thirty minutes in the morning, afternoon and evening, and most people got their info from newspapers, there was less hyperbole and more facts. We are overloaded with information and much of it B/S to push an agenda from one side or the other.
