    Default What would you do?

My company is relocating to Cleveland, Ohio. My whole family is in St. Louis, MO and so is my wife's family. I've been offered many generous move packages and turned them all down. Employees in the office have all been given their end dates (all before the end of this year). MY end date, is over a year a way and I was told that I have a place with the company as long as it is mutually beneficial. If I work through the end of the time they have specified, I will receive a "Stay put Bonus" plus severance. To me, it seems like by having a later date, them saying they will work with me to push it back in the future as long as we both agree, etc that there are a few things I need to decide.

Do I leave well enough alone and ride it out?
Ask for a raise in the mean time?
Leave now and find a different job (walk away from the money they are offering if I work through X date)?
Demand my retention package up front?

I've never been through this before, but with the amount of change in senior leadership, if they go away, I'm feeling all deals are null and void. I'd love to hear everyones thoughts. Please vote in the poll at the top of the page. Thanks

When chgs came at my work place I had 44yrs in and had the ability to say: Bye!
You're choice in today's economy would really stress me. With the Elections only a few months away, I don't think there are very many that know what's going to happen in Oct/Nov/Dec. my advice: 1. look at the current and projected demand in your field. 2. Look at what management above you is doing. Rats in the mineshaft analogy often is true.

I didn't vote because I don't know what to tell you. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush though.

I've never been in this position. As Jimmy stated " a bird in the hand" may be a good way to go. I also think you have to look at the type of people you work for ie: trustworthy, ethical, honest etc.. I would imagine those qualities are important in making your decision.

    Good Luck.

I would take the transfer. Good jobs are hard to find these days. Unless of course you can do just as well where you are now but if that was the case you wouldn't be asking for opinions from us.

Having a military mind, I would have to see things on paper. Telling me something will not hold up if they change their mind. I didn't vote as this is too personal an issue. Look at everything said, the needs of you and your family, pray about it. Talk openly with SWMBO. Make your choice and be happy with it as looking back and saying what if will change nothing.

Thanks Paul. I have my "Stay put" bonus papers in hand, but everything else is relying on the people who say it, I agree with you, if I had it in writing I'd be MUCH more comfortable.

Thank you for the input Jeff. I trust leadership...but I don't trust our ownership. Our owner seems to make decisions in a brash and irrational manner (IE everyone above my level has been replaced within the last 12 months....some of them replaced twice, including the President & CEO).

Thank you for the response. All of management is moving...their contract requires them to stay there for 18 months, but I don't see anyone putting their houses on the market.
