Interesting read. Even if you try and practice avoidance of those areas because sooner or later you will be a dumb tourist and wind up where you should not be. Sometime it just finds you no matter what.

I'm still pro gun and would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6 but this is pretty sobering after I typed my zip code in.

This has been a very interesting thread.
My views will be much what they were before entering it, but at more than one level, I feel educated by opposing views.
    For that I am grateful.
I will, with respect to all posters, bow out of this discussion, and those of the same theme.

I've never believed that i could change anyone's mind or opinion in any internet discussions and that is what i have not tried to do. But i'm most interested to learn why people think the way they think and that gives me a change to learn something new about world. Not just USA but all over.
We had different way to approach this problem but the problem is very different in the USA and Finland and Scandinavia. I'm not counting maniacs like Holmes, Auvinen or Breivik as they were exceptions that are sadly maybe impossible to stop, even in the future. No matter amount of laws or armed citizen. Lunatics will find their way.

All i could point out was that if people are willing to draw the gun in some places, then something should be done about that. All i can understand that now, there it is a race between bad guys and good guys. If bad guys are the ones with the guns and the mindset to kill then it's good guys should have the same right too. It is perfectly logical. If you have poverty or poor education, giving people no hope for the future, maybe your politicians should do something about that, i do not know.

Our problem is not like that at all, but of all the violent crimes made with a weapon of any kind, happens between people who already know each other, family members or friends. Weapons make it worse, and that is what my examples were all about. There are countless amount of cases, where police had to go between fighting people or couple, and afterwards everyone thought that luckily there was no weapons involved; nobody get killed. Still our violence rate is low. We could discuss about "what should be done in Finland" but that would be in a different thread and not much of success, i think. Most folks here are still from US. We Europeans are rare minority.

Every country out there and I don't care how homogeneous they are, they can find some group to hate within their own country. It's really very easy. Anybody who doesn't look like you, or has another religion or talks a bit different or dresses a bit different or maybe just comes from the South and everyone knows those from the South of ... are just inferior.

Examples of this are all over the world.

Anyone who doesn't shave daily with a straight razor stropped on cordovan and who doesn't lather with triple milled soap and a Plisson HMW. No jury would convict me.

That is sadly a reality today. Extreme right wingers like Breivik are sadly attacking against immigrant, even those who have done nothing wrong, just being the wrong skin color or religion. I do not like the word it looks today.

But it has always been so, and this has nothing do to with the thread. We have gupsy minority, or romani, if you wish, that has been here for maybe 500 years. 'Horsemen and thieves', as they were called. They have pretty different culture or ways to live and that used to be some kind of issue when i was young. We have Samian minority too, but never (or at least with the last 400 years) we've had no problem living with them. Nowadays they have semi-authonomic area in the northern part of Scandinavia.

Howevers, back in the days of old when i was kid, it used to be very common that 'white folks' (angry young men) went into gupsy towns (although they are white too, but they have black hair which Finns do not) to look for a fight, which happened of course. And vice versa. I lived with my grand parents in a small county town.
Now, once happened that gupsies came with 3 buses in our town to look for a fight again. And of course local older boys started to get their baseball bats and all but my grandfather decided to call the police because, as a veteran, he didn't fancy violence.
The answer that the police gave him in a phone was/and is still something to remember: I think that you boys in town are capable of dealing this kind of problem without any help from police. Just make sure you do not use weapons or kill anyone.
Nowadays it makes me laugh but it was reality back then.

Heh, the good ol daily fail. Always happy to show the people of Britian how lucky they are that they've been disarmed. Unfortunately, I dont think they realized the irony of talking about how dangerous Chicago is, what with it having some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation...

Also, I think many of the non-gang related homicides might be gang related. For instance I looked up the one in Moss point, MS, and that was where someone gunned up a rap concert. That shooting was labeled as non-gang related. Now perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions, and the concert was attacked by a misguided individual who, quite rightfully, feels that rap is a loathsome form of music and should be eradicated, and made the unfortunate decision to take matters into his own hands, but my sneaking suspicion is that the shooting might actually have been gang related... call me crazy if you wish.
