You did what you had to do. Be it a knife, bat or claw hammer. He got the hint and you went home. That's what counts. Don't lose sleep over your decision. Some campuses are allowing concealed carry in the US now. He would surely have gotten a surprise had you leveled that Norinco 1911 at him......I call it bowel evacuation.

A knife in the hands of a skilled fighter is an awesome weapon and someone with such skills can take down a group of people in close quarters before they even know what's happening. As with any weapon it should only be pulled if you intend using it and when you do you continue to use it until the threat is neutralized.

I promised myself I would never engage in these discussions years ago.

    I blew it...sorry....never mind.

For anyone interested...please seek professional guidance on self defense. Things can get VERY ugly VERY quickly even if you make GOOD choices. Bad choices only lower your odds.

Please, prepare accordingly based on your perceived needs.

    Stay safe!

Default What is wrong with people today?

I read this post and I have something to share too anybody that wants to learn from my mistakes. Like OP Devilpup, it turn out good for everybody, thanks God!
About 3 years ago there were a series of rapes on parkings and a park less than a mile from my home. Three in total in less than six months. As I parked across the Walmart parking, where one of the rapes occurred, I decided to park far away from the other cars to get on some shade, and walk to the grocery store. As I passed one of the lonely cars, I looked and saw a men making love to a women in the rear seat. In the missionary position I couldn't see his or her face. As I kept walking the thought of the rapist came to my mind. I pulled the phone out of the pocket to call the police. I thought on my 20 year old daughter and thought to myself, what if it was my daughter? I would like the stranger to intervene. That's when I felt a responsibility to the women's father to intervene before the police arrived.
As I approached the car again, my thoughts of the perp been armed and getting a jump on me as I knocked on the window, (mistake #1), I pulled my gun to get the jumped on him. As I nokcked on the window and see the guys and "lady's" face for the first time, I was so scared that I would need to shoot, that I think I was almost trembling. It turned out they where just a young couple making love at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on the parking lot of a grocery store???
What if the guy thought I was the perp and he saw the need to defend himself? I would have been at fault if I hurt him. As God had it, nothing happen. I put the gun down and let them know in a stern voice to take it to a hotel and that from where I was it looked like a rape to me.
My motivation was right, but the execution was not thought trough.
My lessons learned, call police first, approach car from an advantage position where I could take cover if I felt threatened and then take action after. Double O

When I was in jujitsu before destroying my knee a few years back, just for demonstrations sake we used markers held as knives and went through several scenarios in as realistic as way as possible.

There was not a single scenario out of everybody in class going through several, where both parties didn't receive what would be fatal wounds.

With that said, I do carry a knife, cold steel xl voyager tanto point, and I love it.

I had to pull it once, when I was bouncing a couple of years ago and I was the only security on that day. Two meth addicts armed with really large claw hammers cornered the female owner outside and tried to force the few people out there to open the door. I heard screaming and came out to see the tweakers menacing and swinging and threatening everybody that moved and shouting to let them in or they were going to kill us.

I was damn glad to have the knife I can tell you.

I didn't brandish it, I just snapped it out and circled so they couldn't get on two sides of me at once and then advanced on them. I guess they spotted the knife and between that and my advancing they lost their nerve and ran to their running car. Which they then tried to back over me with.

I told the cops later that I had the knife and had pulled it and had every intention of doing grievous harm.

    The cops all said "good!"

If someone is outnumbered, outsized or otherwise in reasonable fear for his life and/or physical safety, he is not obligated to wait for an attack to actually commence prior to drawing his weapon. Far as the BG running straight to the cops and pressing charges, that did not happen with any of the individuals I had to deal with. Perhaps they were all of a persuasion that tends to stay away from John Q. Law as much as possible?

    HA !!!!

Wanna tell that story to the Cop that charged me anyway... In Colorado

BTW I was the un-armed one, of the 5 people involved, 1-vs-4, one had already cut me with a switchblade, another had a tire iron.. Three of them hit the pavement, the last backed off and lied.. Granted I won in court, but I was still charged along with the two with the weapons...
Expect to be charged regardless of the truth, be prepared to defend yourself on the steet and in court...

I made sure to bleed all over the summons as I was signing it I figured it would help my case LMAO

The Law in Colorado stood on my side, but I had to prove it in court anyway...Lucky for me we always had an Attorney on Retainer so it was not out of my pocket per se..
Also so you know 3 outta of the 4 had priors... I have ZERO still to this day....

People that defend themselves, are not always looked upon favorably in court, we have a "Submit and Live" mentality in the US when it comes to street crime, people that don't submit mess with the system so be careful when you choose to "stand your ground"...

ps: After the case was over, I talked with the City Prosecutor, his words " If you had shot them, you probably wouldn't have been charged, at least by my office"

Great story, DoubleO! At least you DID something! So many today would've called the police and walked away. What if that'd been a rape and you'd done nothing? She'd have been assaulted for another 5-10 minutes probably before the police had gotten there.

One time, there was a domestic dispute above my and a friends apartment, so we called the police. Fearing she was being beaten to death, my friend insisted we go up there, knock on the door, and threaten him to stop. So, we went up there and did just that. The whole time I was thinking, "what if he opens the door, feeling threatened of course, holding a weapon? What are we gonna do about it being unarmed? What if we have to restrain him and she, like most women in her situation, doesn't take too kindly to that and pulls a weapon of her own? What then?".

Some say trust your gut. Some say 'be led by the Spirit'. I lean towards the latter.

Glad to hear you didn't get shot Oh yeah, in that instance the guy was too cowardly to open the door anyway. My friend was shouting for him to leave her alone and that the police were on their way. When the police got there, we were all too eager to sign as witnesses to the incident.

Danged if you do and danged if ya don't. It's so frustrating that people in this country feel so obsessed about controlling how others defend themselves that they elect officials to strong arm those same people by rule of law (and at the end of an officer's barrel) into a helpless state
